England, Scotland, Wales, Britain and British Isles had well-defined territory throughout history. So how can you define China as united entity when it was only confined within Great Wall for most of the history of China.

Hawaii and Hawaiians weren't part of the US till the 19th century, they also put up a great resistance to be annexed by the US.
