Indian Defence Budget Could Touch US$ 40 Billion In 2009

India is planning to raise its military budget by 50% to almost $40 billion, making military expenditure 3% of the annual gross domestic product (GDP), the defense minister said.

"Our current defense spending is lower than 2% [of GDP]...and it should be at least 3%," A. K. Antony said at a meeting with top military commanders on Tuesday, without specifying a timeframe. India raised its defense spending in February by 10% to $26.5 billion for the fiscal year 2008-2009, but it still fell below 2% of GDP for the first time in at least a decade.

India's neighbors and long-term rivals, Pakistan and China, allocate around 3.5% and 4.3% of GDP to defense, respectively. The minister said top priority must be given to the modernization of the Indian Armed Forces and half of the defense budget should be allocated for the purchase of new military equipment.

"The modernization of armed forces has become a global trend," he said. "We must also assume a new approach taking into account a variety of threats to our national security." The Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India said in a report last year that over the past three years, India had spent as much as $10.5 billion on military imports, making it amongst the largest arms importers in the developing world.

India's military imports are expected to reach $30 billion by 2012 with its armed forces expected to ink defense deals for at least 126 multirole fighters, 155-mm howitzers, a variety of helicopters and long-range maritime reconnaissance aircraft.

That's good news. With 8% + growth for the last 6 years, India can easily absorb 1 % hike in the defence budget.

Btw, is that bofors above, and what make is that truck.

I don't know if it is a good news or not, but perhaps it is necessary in the security environment of our region.

We still need to clean up our defense procurement system.

Defence budget is never a fixed figure. In most cases, its the budget relative to the threat. And with Pak and China threat, which has a combined defence budget of $60 Billion, it makes sense to have atleast $40 Billion.

Also, there is very high probablity that China will react in an Indo-Pak War.
Pak, will obviously react in an Indo-China war, to support their master.

In any of the above two situations, Nuclear weapons will be used if there is loss of territory in any part of India.

The "No first use policy" is only for political reasons. In three years we will have the missile defence system, which china too does not have. And that's the strategic period to make a pre-emptive strike against Pakistani nuclear weapons. Even if some escape [Highly impossible, as pakistan does not have SLBM], we have to shield to take care of.

And for this, we will need highly accurate intelligence information.

I think you should come back to planet earth before its to late for you and dont forget to take your medicine. Pre emptive strike against Pakistan. Would you ever dare to do that or you would request Israel to help you out...:pakistan:

War is in no ones interest Indo-Pak war will not happen its the reality however some political rheotic will happen. Some terrorist strikes may happen but that is not war.

I do not think China will react in Indo-Pak war, Economic compulsions far out weigh military ones. However China will continue to supply military equipments to Pakistan as it see Pakistan as a reliable partner and that too due to economic reasons.

According to your stats, 4.3% of China's $3.42 trillion GDP would give her a defense budget of $147 billion, how could India match up with that? :coffee:

BTW, China has already deployed land-based high-intensity laser weapon for missile defense in Tibet, your nukes can't even hit Lhasa, let alone Beijing.

Yup the gun is bofors and the truck is Volvo make. The entire programme is called Bofors Archer system, it is one of the best Self Propelled Artillery available in market. The Archer system is in competition for Indian SPA.

Mixiong, kindly enlighten us with what kind of weed you smoke, seems to be strong stuff. Or wait a second , did they teach you this in your schools

Good for you. Hope the coffee was good.

BTW, India obviously has no offensive interests against China. We just need to make sure China doesn't get too ambitious in Asia.

The kinds of land claims you guys keep making all around (Mongols are Chinese!), makes it incumbent on us to be watchful.

I have met many Chinese and almost always found them to be easy to relate to and intelligent and practical. Its almost puzzling how your leaders can be so irrational when it comes to the boundary issues. Anything that China occupied at any time in history or even the reverse (when China was occupied by foreigners) becomes Chinese territory forever!

I am almost puzzled by the Mongol thing. I know they attacked China many times, indulged in genocides (and perhaps once wanted to completely eliminate the countryside but did not implement that decision.).

Since when they became Chinese?

I think hiking the defence budget to 3% of the Gdp is a good move. Possibility of war with China or Pakistan is highly unlikely though, but, the more you sweat in peace, the less you bleed at war. Thats what the Indians might be thinking.

Dude, you're a rock star.

China is so worried about US's influence around China you would think last thing China would want is another big power against itself. India is not laying any claim on Chinese territory, its China laying claim to Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh. I dont get it, why would you want have another country's military around your country? :coffee:

Dude learn some manners before you start harping again with your frustrated mind. How many times in any of the previous conflicts, did china intervene? What makes you think that we see china as our master. Stop ranting and post something constructive. Your increase in defence budget hasnt made us loose our sleep and we sure dont need any outside help in an event of conflict with You guys. We can take care of it on our own.
