Indian Coast Guard Hovercraft H-187 Commissioned

Because the very same characteristics that make hovercrafts suited to beach assaults/landing ops make them ideal for patrol duties in certain areas like marshes and swamps- which is exactly where ICG intends to operate these vessels.

But a LCAC like this one, will be an overkill right? This is meant for beach assault, and if am not wrong Beach assault should be the job Inidan Navy/Army(Marines) and not Coast Guard.

Yes but the one for the ICG is not an LCAC and is nowhere as big as the USN LCACs, it is a hovercraft that will be utilised for patrolling. ICG have operated hovercrafts for some time now, this isn't new.

Yeah I know that lol.

But someone on the last page suggested that ICG should have gone for these LCACS and not the hovercraft.

There is a difference between what you have posted and a LCAC. ICG has procured a hovercraft, not a LCAC, which is suited for amphibious assault and not just for rescue. Amphibious assault is the purview of the IN not the ICG.

I think PN should try to build similar class hover craft with China and induct 21 of them for the 1000+ Kms coast.

An LCAC is a hovercraft too, the difference is that it is a vessel that is used for transport roles only, while the one ICG procured is for patrol or search and rescue roles. Both share the same advantages of hovering over water or any kind of ground and that's why both offer the same advantages over conventional naval vessels.

Does not seem to have any self defence mechanism? What kind of light armament does it carry?

yes ....i agree that lcac is not best suited for ICG.......
its good for navy.....

main advantage hovercraft possesses that they r not prone to mines either land or water...

cant they be used as a seamine detector....????

The system, designed and supplied by Monitran as a turnkey solution, employs 14 MTN/1100W general purpose constant-current analysis sensors with ac outputs, sealed to IP68 (submersible) and supplied with marine-approved cables.

Tony Roxburgh, project manager of Griffon Hoverwork, explains that these feed into a bulkhead-mounted waterproof cabinet that contains 14 MTN/8066 g-mac signal conditioning units.

Those, in turn, provide analogue outputs proportional to velocity and peak g, which feed into a PCB-mounted microcontroller, programmed by Monitran to drive a touch-screen display on the front of the cabinet.

"A hovercraft's drivetrain experiences a wide range of loads, in terms of torque and rpm, during operation, as it tends to be worked hard when a crew is responding to an emergency," comments Roxburgh.

"The Indian Coast Guard requested that their 8000TDs be fitted with an integrated engine and gearbox vibration monitoring system to warn the pilot if the drivetrain experiences any abnormal vibrations."

We need more like these.. Will be very usefull in border states such as TN , Gujarat and bengal !!
