Children Skip School to be Lowered into Wells to Fetch Water

Children have to miss school to go fetch water by entering into wells

BEED, MAHARASHTRA: Even before summers arrive, wells in Marathwada tend to run dry. Though glints of water show at the bottom, pitchers sent down come up empty.

But the villagers have come up with a desperate solution: Before they send down a pitcher, they tie children with ropes and lower them into the wells. It is the child's task to fill the pitchers with mugs.

The wells are mostly over 60 feet deep. The ropes are thin nylon, barely meant to carry more load than a full pitcher. It is only providence that has so far averted a tragedy.

And for this exercise every day, young children are made to miss schools.

For 12-year-old Priyanka Murkute of Marathwada's Murkutwadi village, water has priority over education.

Every day she is lowered into a 60-feet-deep well, tied precariously with a rope. Every time she descends into the well, she fills 10 pitchers of water and sends them up.
For an onlooker, the process is unnerving. At this well, the exercise is especially dangerous, since it is rocky and deep.

But for Priyanka, this is routine. Need takes precedence over fear and practice has made her an expert. "This has been happening for three years now. This is our only source of water, and I have to skip school at times," she said.

Groundwater levels have plummeted to 300 feet in several places across Marathwada owing to wanton boring for agricultural use or consumption. And it is the children who bear the burden.

Priyanka's village is part of the constituency of Maharashtra's Rural Welfare Minister, Pankaja Munde. And the administration and the local politicians have little to offer than age-old promises of tankers. There, however, is no contingency plan in case a similar drought grips Ahmednagar, from where the water is sourced.

What is wrong in sending a kid to fill the buckets? They are light and small and can do this job more safely and easily than any adult. As a child I myself used to get water from our well like that.

What well is not rocky and deep? It is dangerous only if the well is filled with water and the child can't swim. It's not like the kids are left in the well and everyone goes home to eat.

Its the priorities that people have. Education versus water. Mars explorer and $20 billion Rafale versus providing water pumps and bathrooms to villagers.
that's the problem poor people dont want mars missions they want water they want food they want jobs that is it .... but the elite class wont understand this

Hi,
Most of the budget of India is consumed for poverty upliftment and social devlopment policies.Poverty in India is due to corruption and beareucratic inefficiecny and not due to defence spending or mars mission.

Best way for a South Asian government to take action is to embarrass them into action especially if it’s on the Western media. That’s our mindset we just don’t want to look bad and we definitely don't do it, because we actually care about these people. Saving face is more important for us South Asians. :disagree:

It's not all hunky dory in pakistan either. Did that stop pakistan from spending billions on nukes versus providing water pumps and bathrooms to villagers?

Every issue facing is allocated its own budget. The difference is that the money allocated for Mars mission was not misused or did not reach corrupt politicians or contractors. While theese projects for public are easily misused and most of it does not reach to the poor. Even if you put all the money 100% of GDP , the result would be almost the same.

what is your point?? that is water scarcity... it is very common in rural villages... it have noting to do with india's science exploration. if your are jealous in india's rise in space technology is at it peak then keep it within yourself. india's mars expoloration cost only $74 million.. not 20 billion... water scarcity can only solved through infrastructure development and india is investing a lot in infrastructure.

our politicians should have pity on the people of south asia.

money is the problem.. we don't have the money for infrastructure in every part of the country... western media always report these kind of news about all the Asian countries.. they never care about the problems in their country. it is very funny to report others problem.
