Now that the whole matter has been laid to rest, let me share some thoughts:
1. Hats off to a few members who sent cryptic posts to help people from going into complete meltdown. I had begun to think that this was a targeted strike to take out a terrorist nest or something, but I could not explain the jet engine. I am glad I deleted my post which pinpointed the location & had a brief allusion to what I had begun to suspect. It would have started a useless tangent.
2. I still can not explain everything appropriately or to my own satisfaction. It is a toss up between a probing attack (too many questions) or an actual bungle up (how exactly may that have happened? still too many questions).
3. To be safe, any such thing that happens next MUST be responded to forcefully & based on updated SOPs with clear & unambiguous communication of intent to Indians. We can not take ANY chances & Indians must understand this very very well. They'd better not think of repeating this again if it was a probing attack. They'd better make damn sure that any such tests are done far away from Pakistan or else a repeat would result in much more than a bruised ego.
4. I am thankful to a Twitter friend (@MyHorizonPk) who prodded me to consider it an Indian missile. I had been researching indian missile engines when I learnt of the press conference that established the missile as Brahmos.
5. It was unfortunate to see the extent of chest-thumping that got displayed on this thread. While it is OK to acknowledge hurt emotions, it is never a good idea to decide on a course of action in anger. Some people got exposed as lunatics braying for blood. Idiots.
6. If something comes out of this episode, it should be the almost desperate need for peace, de-escalation, & stability in the region. Who knows what could have happened, or could happen in future if something similar happens. I hope the Indian side realizes the stakes & takes practical steps for long term peace. Indian intelligentsia should step up & wrest the discourse from the extremists.
7. Lastly, looking at the damage done on ground, I fully expect Pakistan to play down the damage to civilians & property. Don't be surprised if stories later emerge of damage to life & property.
