Indian Bofors gun's barrel bursts during trials

Agree...I was pointing at another excuse for IA to push the deal back:(, although barrel burst is not very severe..

Must be as you say it is, but could the Gun be fired after this?
If you were the customer, looking to buy the Gun; would you buy it after this?

Some clown must have forgotten to take off the muzzle cover before firing!!! Jeeez! :laughcry:

Or the ammo must have been imported from...well, you know where all the fakes are made!! :D

OFB is a second or even third rate manufacturer.

If Indians want high quality indigenous weapons, PSU's are not the way to go.

This result does not surprise me. It would be easier to buy Indian made products if they could actually meet international standards.

Captain....we are not talking abt a .22 here and we know what TOT means. we are not a great nation when it comes to complex metallurgy.

My point is can we give a chance to our industry than finding excuses to a bad name one???...what are we as a taker and I am expecting a right answer as you know the best..ur POV pls..

We used to be incredible when it came to Metallurgy. What the f-- happened? Shows so many issues affecting our progress are still there. May God allow Modi to win and change India from incompetent to competent.

Spot on! When will people from subcontinent understand that this is where we lack expertise! :what:

Or simply poor metallurgy in the material used by OFB to manufacture the Gun Barrels. I would believe this more easily!

A micro fracture is bad enough, what does "barrel burst not severe" actually mean?

Hmmmmmm...... very interesting statement.

Hi @Hyperion; it is certainly "poor metallurgy" when hyper-patriotism gets mixed with deficient metals. :P

So now Modi is the "Metallurgist to beat all Metallaurgists"??? :what: :cuckoo:

Indian Bofors gun's barrel bursts during trials - The New Indian Express

A barrel of the indigenous - version of the Bofors howitzers burst during their trials in the Pokharan range, delaying plans to induct these artillery guns into the Army.
The Defence Acquisition Council had recently approved the procurement of 144 such guns by the Army which are being manufactured by the Ordnance Factory Board, Jabalpur.
During the recent trials of the gun in Pokharan, the barrel of the gun burst when the Army was conducting the user trials for approving the gun for induction in the Army, sources said here.
The OFB has now been asked to carry out a defect identification inquiry (DII) by the Defence Ministry to ascertain the reasons behind the bursting of the barrel during the crucial trials, they said.
The user trials are carried out by the Services for approving the product being tested for induction.
The gun has been performing very well so far but the mishap will delay the user trials for another three to four months, they said.
Defence Minister AK Antony has been taking personal interest in the development of this programme and has asked both the Department of Defence Production and the Army to cooperate fully for making it successful.
The gun design, provided as part of technology transfer, has been gathering dust due to the taint associated with Bofors in the light of the payoffs scam.
If successful, the project would save the country millions of rupees and give the Indian Army much needed firepower.
The Army has failed to procure even a single piece of artillery after the Bofors scandal erupted in 1980s. All attempts to procure howitzers have had to be cancelled due to one reason or another.

all the indigenous weapons in India meet this same fate.

Manhoos tu bhee Qutub Minar kay baghal mein "rust resistant iron rod" kee metallurgy ko aaj kall kee metallurgy say compare karr raha hai. It's like comparing Khwarizmi's algo's to those of today! :D

You understood it completely different .

That iron pillar is considered to be a achievement of those time and my reply was to @Nisha assertion that we were incredible that time but now lost it .

The barrel burst can happen for many reasons and in this case this is our first attempt on a gun barrel(U know how complex is the mettalurgy) so I can give it an emotional discount for a home grown stuff.
