Indian AWACS makes first flight

Its the angle of coverage. The circular one has 360 degree coverage and the rod like has lesser degree somewhere arround 270 degree i suppose.

The platforms part here is just Range, Speed, Altitude, Counter measures, Operational feasiblity ect... it has nothing to do with perfomance of the antennae.

Forgive me for sounding dumb , but can anyone advise what is the main difference/advantage or disadvantage of the rectangular attachment on top of the AWACS like Indian AWACS and SAAB as compared to the circular one like that of E3-Sentry

True, but would'nt the dish create a lot of lift on the small Embraer et all??
But the rectangular one creates comparatively less lift on the A/C which would be easy for it to handle.

Thanks for the explanation , however the Wikipedia source says that "The ESM system in DRDO AEW&CS will have complete 360 degree coverage in azimuth and have a database of up to 3000 emitters against which threats will be scanned "

Drdo Press Release

Maiden flight of first indigenous Indian Airborne Warning and Control System (AEW&C)
The first fully modified Aircraft for indigenously developed Indian Airborne Warning and Control
System(AEW&C) took to skies on 06
th
December 2011, as part of its first maiden flight in Embraer
facilities at Sao Jose dos Campos in Brazil with about 1000 Mission System Components provided by
CABS, DRDO. These include the critical item – AESA (Active Electronic Scanning Antenna) Radar Antenna
developed by DRDO and certified from ANAC, International FAR Certification Agency.
“The flight is a major milestone towards realizing the dream of Indigenous Airborne Early Warning
and Control System, which will put India into a Select Club of Countries” said SA to RM congratulating
DRDO Scientists and M/s Embraer Engineers on this achievement.
While this Aircraft will now undergo full certification process over next two year period, India
will receive two aircrafts by middle of next year. Here, the Mission Systems developed by Various DRDO
Labs will be integrated with these aircrafts. Currently , these systems are undergoing ground integration
and evaluation at CABS (Centre for Airbourne Systems), Bangalore.
Two of these systems will be delivered to IAF after detailed Test & Evaluation by end 2013.
With the advent of this, India is looking forward to join the league of Countries capable of
developing and delivering such complex Airborne System of Systems to its user.

^^I may be waaaaaaay off but I think that the dimension of the carrier platform is the deciding factor.
The A50 is huge when compared to the modded Embraer.

India previously had a circular attachment on top in the Airborne Surveillance Platform they had way back in 1996 on a similar small turbo prop aircraft .. so i guess size is not the factor here

Rectangular attachment on top covers about 130 grad from each side, leaving blind front and rear 50 grad sectors:

E-3 rotating radar provides 360 grad coverage. Advantage of Erieye is that its smaller and cheaper both for maintenance and prosecution.

Phalcon uses 3 non rotating radars in the dome, which also provide 360 grad:

Another advantage of Phalcon is that its L-band, so it gives increased range against stealth targets and harder to jam.

Also Erieye and Phalcon use AESA radars, which provide faster update rate than rotating E-3 radar.

That blade seems to be seriously messing with the aerodynamics of the aircraft, hence those extra fins.
