The Indian Army has decided to junk the Future Infantry Soldier As a System (F-INSAS) program in favor of two separate projects.

The new program will have two components: one arming the modern infantry soldier with the best available assault rifle, carbines and personal equipment such as the helmet and bulletproof vests and the second component is the Battlefield Management Systems (BMS).

Observers say that the bifurcation has been done on account of the budgetary convenience.

In the BMS category goes all the communication and optical equipment of a modern soldier which includes palm-top communication equipment and the helmet mounted cameras. The assault weapon field trials are going on: there are four kinds, Baretta (Italy), Colt (USA), Bren (Czech) and Tavor (Israel). The last has already been chosen for Indian Special Forces.

Vice Chief of Army staff, Lt General Philip Campose, told our correspondentat the end of the media interaction, “There is no F-INSAS program any more”.

He detailed how the army adopted the program in a way that keeps the infantry soldier less burdened by technology, and more agile to carry out his tasks.

SIMPLE BULL SHIT!!!

Good news.I don't see(with the budget we have) we can equip 1.3 million troops with F-INSAS.This will lead to faster modernisation.

No the headline of this thread should be like this

"INDIAN ARMY is so much scared from the neighbors i-e Pakistan , China that now they are making Drastic Changes in Army "

between you must eliminate the rapists first than make what ever changes you want to...............

We are downgrading from what was actually planned you troll!! Which means that we are equipped enough to handle you and the rapers.

Integration of both will be key and how well they gel together

The F-INSAS as it was was only moving ahead with the BMS element of the project and that too only on brigade level and up.

The personal equipment part of F-INSAS was simply going nowhere. This move will make the entire modernisation effort speedier and it always seemed unnecessary to me to have the BMS element tethered to personal equipment upgrades when the two are hardly linked.

Hoping to see some real results in terms of equipment changes soon (another 2-3 years likely).

Why the assault rifle list doesn't include MCIWS??
MCIWS is not linked to the F-INSAS project and will be adopted by the rest of the Army once it is in serve (govt it 3-4 years). The first guys to get the new multi-cal rifles are the elite units- airborne infantry, sappers, signallers etc and will be the same ones who get the new future tech first. The MCIWS will then go to all infantry and support units.

Let's hope they select MKU gear they are world class & are made in India

^Near completion ?! You kidding me ?

Yes, read in an interview. F-INSAS is vast and it would take 2 years more. Most of the systems are already under testsing.

If they can't afford to equip all the soldiers with F-INSAS how they will be able to equip them with foreign systems? The more foreign systems, the more cash back, its just simple.

They can afford to equip them, F-INSAS hasn't been scrapped because of cost but because the unworkable nature and incompatibility between the BMS side and personal equipment modernisation effort. There won't be huge amount of foreign content under this future soldier program either on the personal equipment or the BMS side. Much of the BMS modernisation is in the mature stages of development and roll out in India, it is the personal equipment that needs to be procured now and this will have to come from India.

ALL this equipment is very expensive

We need to boost the firepower of our infantry ; the fancy gadgets can wait
