The Indian Army is looking to acquire an unspecified number of armed military hovercraft, technically Air Cushioned Vehicles Troop Carriage (ACV-TC) for use in the Eastern theatre. The Army wants hovercraft that can cruise at 25-40 knots with 80 fully equipped combat troops (excluding crew) along with their battle loads, three-days of logistics requiremements, and vehicles in lieu of troops when necessary. The Army has specified that contending hovercraft should be able to operate in marshy land, sand bars, mudflats, mangroves, tidal creeks, swamps, weed choked lakes, lagoons, backwaters, islands and coastal
areas.

well we finally woke up:partay:

Looks like the Indian Army is waking up after the Pakistan Army has already such equipment in service at the Rann of Kacch.

The BSF should also get such equipment.

How many years will it take the Army to study & procure this equipment?

. .
True, but the Pakistan Marines are naval infantry with a key role to play in the defence of Rann.

Hovercraft tested in college campus

Bangalore: What started as a regular college project assumed significance after a team member's demise. Five final semester mechanical engineering students at Acharya Institute of Technology successfully built and tested a hovercraft, a vehicle which can run on land and water, on campus this week.

"We found out that the Indian Army is importing hovercrafts which can hold five soldiers for Rs20 lakhs to Rs30 lakhs. We were able to build a hovercraft which can hold one person weighing 50kg for under Rs 40,000. So the challenge of building a cost-effective model appealed to us," said Pradeep R Gatti, engineering student.

The team comprising Pradeep, Deepak P Maney, Rakesh N, Nanda Kishore and Dhananjay N have been through it all. They put in their personal savings running up to Rs 60,000 to see the project through.

Mid-way a team member, Vishwanath met with a fatal road accident and succumbed to injuries. "We all wanted to complete this project because we owed it to him. It was his idea to build a hovercraft," Pradeep added.

It took two months of research and planning and about three weeks to complete the project.

They used a Yezdi Roadking 2-stroke, 250cc, 16 bhp engine for the hovercraft. The lift achieved by the hovercraft is about one foot from the ground. Their model has a coat of resin reinforced by glass fibres through the body of the craft to give it strength, make it waterproof and fire resistant. They have worked round the clock on several days to complete work ahead of their exams
