NAGPUR: Even as summer trials for the indigenous 155mm guns, made on the lines of the Bofors howitzers, are planned this month, the army has placed a part order with the Ordnance Factory Board (OFB) to make 20 pieces of these howitzers. This is over and above the guns that are being put up for trials.

"This indicates that the army will be finally inducting the indigenous Bofors. We have already begun procuring material to meet this order," said MC Bansal, chairman of OFB, during a visit to National Academy of Defence Production (NADP). The institute trains officers joining the Indian Ordnance Factory Service (IOFS) cadre.

"We are confident that the guns will pass summer trials also, as there is no room for any doubt. This may be followed by a bulk order of more than 100 guns," said Bansal. So far, as many as 1,800 shells have been fired during the trials, which is probably the highest ever. There was one incident of barrel burst last year, but that was due to defective ammunition in the shell, and not because of the gun's design, Bansal stressed.

OFB is currently designing the 155x45 mm calibre guns, but work is also underway to develop 155x52mm guns, which would have a better range, said Bansal. The army is scouting the global market for the higher calibre guns. Though he did not specify a time frame for it, Bansal said that it is a gradual process and so far certain subsystems of the 155x52 mm howitzer have been developed.

Bansal said OFB will also soon put up carbine machine guns developed jointly with Defence and Research Development Organization (DRDO) for trials. Earlier, there were plans to develop the weapon with Singapore-based ST Kinetics, but the project could not take off following a commission scandal.

He said work on developing the indigenous assault rifle has also been put on the fast track. "There were stoppages during the firing trials conducted last month, but it is a part of product development, and will be come over," said the OFB chief.
At the same time, DRDO has been asked to make certain modifications in the multimodal hand grenade also planned to be manufactured by the ordnance factory. There were problems related to the timing of explosion once the grenade's pin is taken off, which has to be addressed before going ahead with bulk production, said Bansal.

On the government plans to have 100% FDI in the defence sector, he said OFB does not see it as competition, since certain components of strategic importance that do not pass economic feasibility will continue to be made in the ordnance factories.

20!!?? We aren't exactly fighting the Maldives here. WTF is wrong with the Army? Even after successful trials they are ordering so less. What's their problem with indigenous stuff.

Could be waiting for fresh budget?

Could be waiting for fresh budget?

The last time it happened, AK Anthony returned a percentage of the total allocations because the deals 'got delayed'. We don't want that.

I think the Army should have ordered a 100 pieces at least.

When will i see an indian army replete and bristling with thousands of modern heavy gun?In this lifetime i hope...:(

What happened to Guns shown by TATA, Kalyani group and L&T ... are they being tested ??

.
at least it is a start.hopefully they'll increase the number soon.

I strongly think India should build a new field gun and a light howitzer as well.we've to replace massive amount of filed guns while there is no plan has been made yet.

huh..India doesnt have an indigenous howitzer the army uses?o_O
Which howitzers do you people currently use?

Bofors Fh 77s. But only around 200 or so in service. They were imported from Sweden, but the funny thing is that India had a license to build hundreds of them for decades. But apparently no one knew about until recently

Meanwhile, our artillery arm is short in howitzers

you mean India had a licence to produce them and was producing them but nobody knew about it until recently? or that they had a licence ot produce it but didnt produce it?
i find it surprising that a big country like india can produce simple Howitzer on its own, the article says before a financial scandal(which i read as corruption) they wanted to develop it with the help of ST KINETICS a Singapore company.:woot: so even singapore is that advasnce in this department than India?:cheesy:
Think India needs to seriously get it acts together in indeginous defence production. Im sure they will/are able to do it if they are determine. They shouldnt be importing simple stuffs like Howitzers and riffles, India is too big a country to be importing such basic weapons. Hopefully the new government will focus on such issues.

the article say:' The army is scouting the global market for the higher calibre guns.' what do they mean by that?:undecided:

Even the USA uses foreign designed howitzers (The M777 which will also be purchased by India) and rifles (there were German and Belgian competitors for the next gen AR for the US Army)

We need a holistic approach to rectify our defence issues. First, we must collect and note top students in high school. Then offer them scholarships and pay packages to go to foreign universities to study majors that are top priorities in fields that we need expertise. Build a road map of what tech we lack and what educational gaps must be obtained in order to fix these issues. Secondly, reverse engineering of stolen tech should be given a high priority as well to counter what what we lack and learn almost immediately. Thirdly, commit research grants and inter collegial competitions on defence projects. It's there but much more needs to be done. More funds should be given to develop colleges that encourage research and defence related purposes. Labs and facilites should be top notch. Fourth, make defence hip and cool to encourage our greatest minds to stay focused on that rather than Bollywood. Indian media places too much emphasis on Bollywood and its not good. In fact, it just enrichs a cottage industry who give zero fuks about India and Indians.

We had a license, but apparently no one knew about it.

No we had the license to produce bofors since the 1980's but Congress hid it and threw Indian under the bus
