The Indian Air Force's (IAF's) fleet of Su-30MKI multirole fighters has suffered 34 mid-air engine failures over a two-year period, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar told parliament on 6 May.

These failures, which occurred between April 2014 and March 2016, had forced the fighters, which comprise the backbone of the IAF's combat fleet, to land with the help of just one of their two engines, the minister said.

"The original equipment manufacturer [OEM: Lyul'ka Saturn] has offered certain modifications or technological improvements for implementation in the production of new aero-engines and during the overhaul of engines," Parrikar said.

The minister said state-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), which licence-builds and maintains the Su-30MKIs and their Saturn AL-31FP engines, had implemented these modifications, but failed to provide further details.

Any info if the other operators of MKs are also facing the same problem? 34 is a huge number for such critical recurring problem.

Yes, China J-10 recently crash rate increase. All thanks to crappy Russian engine(AL-31F)

It means SU-30MKI can be consider as Single Engine fighter jet from now............:woot: :yahoo:
Just look on the performance and serviceability of Su-30 MKI during Red flag which 100% which was in hostile temperature of Alaska

This will be resolved with maintenance facility in India

his, Russia said can "completely" solve the problem plaguing some of the products.

"Maintenance of equipment which has been delivered from Russia is a very sensitive and important issue," Vladimir Drozhzhovi, Head of Federal Services for Military Technical Cooperation of Russias Rostec State Corporation, said here at the Defexpo.

He said Russia has made a lot of proposals concerning long term contracts not only for delivery of spare parts, tools and accessories but also comprehensive maintenance and after sales services of the delivered equipment.

"Proposals are for Su30, MiG 29, and also Vikramaditya aircraft carrier. And I am pretty sure that signing of such type of long term contract for maintenance and after sales services can completely solve the problem," he said.

Currently, serviceability rate of multi-role fighter aircraft Sukhoi is just about under 60 per cent.

The same was initially claimed for Indra dhanush last year but it later transpired that at least on three occasions the MKIs had to abort missions due to operational issues.
@ topic, 34 engine failures in two years, just imagine if it were single engine aircraft....it would be ahead of MiG-21s record.

Good thing we don't have to imagine and IAF doesn't run on Pakistani fanyboy's dreams. Do you have the data of total sortie rates during the same period to arrive at the failure percentage? IAF makes thousands of sortie over two year period and that figure though high is not alarming. This is the price we pay for higher than norm readiness where these jets are pushed to the limits.

AL 31 F is used in Chinese in large numbers ,Is it the engine which is developing faults or is it the regular maintenance ?

No, the Indian fanboys just resort to creating terminologies such as invincible, raptor of the east and lately the icing on the cake is ....MKI the 8th wonder.
Talking of fan boys, you make it sound as you people fly all the sorties in the world....keep in mind, others in the region are constantly flying combat missions apart from the usual training and DACT sorties.

I have never said Pakistan or any xyz country is less professional or less well prepared than India. In fact I have always maintained that given the resources Pakistan has managed it's forces much more efficiently than India.

Though in the end the disparity in resources cannot be bridged with training and professionalism alone. The hard fact is that India spends 5 times more than Pakistan on defence and that is a huge advantage to have on one to one basis but if you look at the entire security environment of India considering China too then we don't spend half as much. So China trumps us with economics and we trump you. We both have to live with this fact.

First Put the Source of this Claim. Red-flag is Latest Talk Present

Secondly Currently India Operate Fleet Of 242 MKI's That's 484 Engines at time & 34 Engine Failures in 2 years is Not Much to Worry in that Sense

PlaaF have Much Worse Record Against Al-41 Engines in their J-10

I meant that is the case also same with Chinese SU-30s?

China has very few Su-30MKK and most J-11B series has domestic engine. That is why Su-30 and J-11 series flighter decrease dramatically.

There are almost half a dozen more countries operating SU-30s. Havent heard much from them on this issue. Either they are using different engines or they have sorted out the matter quite earlier.
