Indian Air Force's cargo helicopter crashes near Kedarnath temple

Six occupants of the helicopter, which was carrying supplies for the Army, received injuries.

New Delhi: An Indian Air Force's cargo helicopter crashed near the Kedarnath temple after it collided with an iron girder near the helipad here.

The MI-17 which was carrying equipment for the Army attempted to land at the helipad close to the holy temple when a part of the helicopter collided with the iron girder. The helipcopter plummeted to the ground and turned upside down - reportedly injuring its six occupants.

Police and local officials quickly cordoned off the crash site and evacuated the passengers who were given first aid and sent for further medical attention.
Last year, a tragic crash involving an MI-17 took place in Arunachal Pradesh in which seven people on board were killed. The Indian Air Force had later stated that the tail rotor of the Russian-manufactured helicopter had come off, leading to the crash.

Mi-17 V5, an upgrade of Mi-17 in the medium-lift category, is fitted with more powerful engines that enhance its payload carriage capability at higher altitudes. Because of some of its special features, it is used regularly in disaster relief operations.


IAF had started inducting Mi-17 V5 choppers in February 2012 after 80 of them were ordered from HAL.

Deposing before the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Defence, IAF officials claimed the number of accidents in the Air Force has come down.

"We used to lose almost 30 to 40 aircraft a year earlier. We reduced that number close to 10. Ours is a business where we have to take risk, but our accident rate is similar to the most professional Air Forces of the world," IAF Vice Chief Air Marshal S B Deo told the lawmakers.

This is the third Mi-17V5 accident in recent years. However, unlike the past two crashes, there were no casualties this time.

The worst accident happened in June 2013, when one of these choppers carrying 19 people on-board crashed, while returning from Kedarnath.

The Mi-17 V5 helicopter was on a rescue mission from Gauchar to Guptkashi and Kedarnath. It was returning from Kedarnath amidst rain in poor visibility condition when it crashed in an area north of Gaurikund.

The second Mi-17V5 accident took place in October 2017 when one of the rotor aircraft crashed after getting airborne from a helipad north of Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh, killing all the seven persons on-board.

Yes, probably not sure...but he successfully manage to crash fully working helo.

Looks more like the wind, landing helis in windy terrain is difficult, the heli looks alright enough to be fixed , so why is everyone chimping out?

IAF Mi-17 V5 Helicopter Crash

An Indian Air Force Mi-17 V5 helicopter crashed near Kedarnath at 0810h on 03 April 18. The helicopter was undertaking a State Government task from Guptkashi to Kedarnath. The accident happened during the landing phase, near the helipad.

All four aircrew and two ground crew, who were onboard the helicopter, are safe. A Court of Inquiry has been ordered to ascertain the cause of the accident.
