Indian air force targets fighter crash rate

The Indian air force has lost 46 fighter aircraft in crashes in the last six years, and has initiated several programmes to improve safety.

The worst year for fighter crashes was 2009, when the country lost 10 aircraft. Eight incidents were recorded in 2006 and in 2008, while six aircraft were lost each in 2005, 2006 and 2010.

Defence minister A K Antony provided the statistics in response to a parliamentary enquiry.

The aircraft involved in the crashes were Mikoyan MiG-21s, Sepecat/Hindustan Aeronautics Jaguars and Sukhoi Su-30MKIs.

Antony said a court of enquiry is formed for each accident to ascertain the causes of and recommend remedial measures.

"Apart from this, the Indian air force has taken various measures relating to the invigoration of aviation safety organisation, streamlining of the accident/incident reporting procedure and audits of the aircraft fleets to identify remedial measures to reduce accidents," he said.

Other measures include efforts to keep birds away from air bases and the enhanced use of simulators during training.

The measures appear to be paying off; so far this year as of 17 August, the air force had lost only two fighters.

Is it Indian pilots are incapable or they have junk in their fleet ????

i hate to say this but i think we are the AF that has the most crashes compared to all the other AF's in the world reasons for this is inducting large quantities of Soviet aircraft with a shortage of spares and crappy pilot training, the MiG-21, MiG-23, MiG-27 were given the name "flying coffins" because of the high crash rates, plus the HPT-32 deepak is a flying coffin,

my view is that to get the PC-7MK2 and HTJ-36 sitara inducted as quickly as possible also

to remove all MiG-27 and non upgraded MiG-21 aircraft from active service and putting them in reserve storage, and get the MMRCA fighter inducted as quickly as possible (adding on the MiG-27 is flawed in its design and its engines are known to be flawed, one infamous incident was during the Kargil war when Flt Lt. Nachiteka MiG-27 had a flameout and crashed, resulting in him being taken as POW and fellow pilot Ajay Ahuja being executed by Pakistani forces)

the SU-30MKI crashes was because of pilot error and a foreign material (most likely a bird) getting into the Engines so the SU-30MKI is no worry

LOL incapable good joke

and as i said in my below post buying large quantities of soviet era aircraft with no spares and lack of a AJT during the 90's led to the high crash rate now the rate has gone down with only 2 crashes this year compared to the 6 last year

I think perhaps Pakistan pilots should be sent across th train these guys as a gesture of goodwill. Whether its 2 crashes or 6 last year the reasons why they are crashing. Find the real issue then you get the real solution

Thanks, Mr. Lankan Ranger ... for all your services. And highlighting yet another noble cause.

reasons for crashes is because of the age of the aircrafts and lack of spares not pilot training then again i think you are being sarcastic but why not this makes the post count go up :D

How about training the Pakistani pilots to fly their own jets and secure their own border.Only a few days back, I heard that some American Special forces sneaked deep inside Pakistan,as close as 50 miles to the capital, stayed for about an hour and then went back unharmed. And guess what, nobody even knew what was happening....Not to mention about the drone attacks...

@ topic..

Yes,there is a problem. The problem is mainly with the Mig-21 fleet. Its old and had been devoid of proper spares for a long time back in the 90s.After the up gradation to Mig-21 Bis,there has been no accident or very few accidents due to mechanical failure.

The problem is also with transition from trainer jet to a high speed jet like Mig-21.
But,we have gone past the worst phase. The IAF has a huge budget nowadays, and rapidly replacing the older generation jets with newer generation SU-30 MKI and the LCA.Some other modernization deals are also in the pipeline

I wasnt actually. You are our neighbours. Why shouldnt we help each other? Perhaps if we started taking down this imaginory wall we have betwwen us with gestures like this then our issues may get reduced. I dont make sarcastic comments when lives are at stake. Thank you for letting me know the reason why they are crashing.

sir.... the thought of Pakistani pilots training Indian pilots is ridiculous while i am all for peace between our 2 nations no military leader on either side would agree to such a thing nonetheless Indian pilots are well trained and very capable this has been proven in joint exercises with other air forces

Ok PunjabSidhu was just an opinion. I apologise if you was offended. I wasnt being sarcastic mate. Take care
