Indian Air force Expansion & Modernization
MMRCA - India's Medium Multi-Role Combat Aircraft (MMRCA) program is to acquire 126 Multi-Role aircrafts at an estimated cost of $10.24 Billion; the program may be extended to acquire a total of 200 aircraft. Competitors for the bid include F-16 Falcon IN, JAS-39 Gripen NG, MiG-35, Dassault Rafale, F-18 E/F Super Hornet & the Eurofighter Typhoon. FOC expected around 2011 production to continue till 2016. (The acquisition will give a significant boost to the Indian Air force).
LCA - India's Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) program is to acquire 220 Light Combat aircrafts. The HAL Tejas is to be a light air superiority aircraft with significant multirole capabilities, and in flight refueling, 20 aircrafts already on order. Eventually to be inducted from 2010 onwards, total units expected to be 220 aircrafts, including two seat versions, Aircraft to have around 70% Indian content. Primary aims are to replace MiG-21's in service. FOC expected around 2010 production to continue till 2020. (HAL Tejas aircrafts will replace MiG-21 aircrafts total 220 HAL Tejas aircrafts expected).
FGFA Indias Fifth Generation Fighter Aircraft (FGFA) program is to acquire 140 Fifth Generation Fighter Aircrafts at an estimated cost between $15-20 Billion; the program may be extended to acquire a total of 200 aircraft. Serious development and funding program being put in place, FOC expected around 2015 production to continue till 2025. (India-Russia fifth-generation fighter aircraft development program, FGFA will be Indias F-22 version)
MCA - Indias Medium Combat Aircraft (MCA) program is to acquire 180 Medium Combat Aircrafts at an estimated cost between $15-20 Billion; the program may be extended to acquire a total of 240 aircrafts. 5th Generation aircraft which is under preliminary development, Project proposal accepted, Indian Air force Joint committee began framing specifications on May 4, 2009. FOC expected around 2016 production to continue till 2026. (MCA aircrafts will replace MiG-27 and Jaguar aircrafts total 240 MCA aircrafts expected).
HAL HJT-36 - The HJT-36 will replace the HJT-16 Kiran in its role of as a trainer in the Indian Air Force. Custom made engines AL-55I arrived in India from Russia in late December 2008; total 225 HJT-36 trainers will be acquired. FOC expected around 2010 production to continue till 2018.
Airbus A330 MRTT - 6 aerial refuel aircraft's to be ordered, FOC expected around 2012.
C-130J Hercules 6 aircraft's ordered the program may be extended to acquire a total of 12 aircrafts. FOC expected around 2011.
Ilyushin/HAL Transport Aircraft 50 aircraft's ordered the program may be extended to acquire a total of 100 aircrafts. FOC expected around 2015. (India-Russia transport aircraft development program)
Light Observation Helicopters 380 Helicopters to be ordered, Deal is expected to be signed in 2010, FOC expected around 2011. (Indian Air force, Indian Navy, Indian Army will use Light Observation Helicopters)
Medium Lift Helicopter 4 Helicopters to be ordered, Deal is expected to be signed in 2009, FOC expected around 2010.
VIP Transport Helicopter 8 Helicopters to be ordered, Deal is expected to be signed in 2009, FOC expected around 2010.
Attack Helicopter 22 Helicopters to be ordered, Deal is expected to be signed in 2011, FOC expected around 2012.

Heavy Lift Helicopter 15 Helicopters to be ordered, Deal is expected to be signed in 2011, FOC expected around 2012.
DRDO-AWACS 3 Aircrafts ordered, FOC expected around 2011.
Phalcon-AWACS 3 Aircrafts ordered, 1 delivered, other 2 expected in 2010.
Su-30 MKI 100 aircrafts already in service, India eventually will have a total of 230 aircrafts by 2015.
MiG-29 SMT - 62 aircrafts being upgraded. Upgrade to latest SMT standards but with additional Indian/French equipment, plus new version of radar, new Mission computers, airframe overhaul, new EW fit new engines. Upgrade program already begun, Upgrade will be completed by 2014.
Mirage 2000/5 51 aircrafts being upgraded. Upgrade to latest Mirage 2000/5 standards. As of April, 2008, Thales & Dassault chosen to Upgrade the aircrafts.
Unmanned Air Vehicles (UAV) Indian Air force continue to order more UAVS.

Special Note: In 2020 Indian Air force expected to operate 1600 combat aircrafts and total 2400 aircrafts.
Indian Air force expected to get stealth fighter jets by 2015 (FGFA).
India will be first Asian country to operate stealth fighter jets because still no official launch date from any other Asian country about other stealth fighter jets.
