Exchange of fire between security forces and the militants holed up inside a government institute building in Pampore area of Kashmir continued for the second day with some explosions reported on Tuesday morning.
Intermittent firing went on through the night and several explosions were noticed on Tuesday morning, officials said.
Unknown number of terrorists are believed to have entered the government-run Entrepreneurship Development Institute (EDI) complex in the early hour of Monday. An encounter began soon after, in which one soldier was injured.
Army officials said that the terrorists were localised to one part of the building on Monday evening.
Extra precautions have been taken to check for any booby traps in the door-to-door search operation underway. “Searching 60 rooms takes time. There is a possibility of Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) in the doors. We are being very deliberate to avoid any casualties on our side. So search teams are extra-cautious,” an officer added.
The EDI building, which imparts vocational training, was targeted by militants in February this year. The gun-battle that stretched for over 48 hours ended with the killing of all three terrorists and three Army commandos, including two officers, also lost their lives.

A grenade was lobbed towards a CRPF patrol team in Bona Bazar in Shopian, officials said.
One jawan and seven civilians were injured as the grenade exploded on the road. The injured have been admitted to a hospital and are reported to be stable.
Security forces cordoned off the area immediately and a search is underway.

From sniffing out an IED to chasing a runaway terrorist and alerting a possible intrusion, Army dogs have been performing their duties with aplomb.
After a long, hard day at work in counter-insurgency operations, Tractor and Sam trudge into their respective camps located in a remote village of south Kashmir and get a hero’s welcome each day.
Some of the Army personnel pat them while others throw a ball and some offer biscuits for a great job done by the two canines during an anti-militancy operation by detecting an Improvised Explosive Devices or alerting troops about suspicious movements.
Tractor, a Rottweiler, and Sam, a German Shepherd, have been deployed with an unit of Army’s Rashtriya Rifles, which keeps a vigil on sensitive areas of south Kashmir covering Kokernag, Achabal, Magam forests and Pahalgam.
Both had the distinction of being part of the operation in which young Hizb-ul-Mujahideen terrorist Burhan Wani and two others were killed on July 8, 2016.
“After the successful operation, these two colleagues of mine also had a sense of relief along with other teammates,” says an Army Major referring to Tractor and Sam.
They are fondly taken care of and engaged by soldiers who devote a considerable free time of theirs to give company to their “colleagues” who keep a watch when they sleep in their makeshift tents or accommodation or walk down the roads which could be mined by terrorists.
Sniffing out an IED planted on a road or chasing a runaway terrorist or alerting a possible intrusion are some of the duties that these dogs have been performing with aplomb.
“When nation sleeps, people know that we are awake and when we take a nap, we know that these (dogs) are awake,” says a Army officer as he fondly pats ‘Sam’ and ‘Tractor’ who had detected an IED on Dailgam-Achabal road.
The canines besides performing the duties in counter-insurgency operations also act as “stress-busters” for the troops who like to play with us, says a handler.
“The dogs have their own mechanism of studying and observing us and adjusting themselves to our mood,” said another Army major.
“During chalo calls when crowd was building, Trigger was very effective with his presence. He activates himself to attack any violent demonstrators,” the officer said and added with a smile, “his nervous system gets activated the moment he hears word ‘Azadi’”.
Besides these canines, there is a Jojo, a Bakarwali dog found locally in hilly areas, and Caesar, a Rottweiler, to help security forces tackle violent demonstrations.
“Last month violent protesters pelted stones at our camp and threw petrol bottles. We refrained from firing as this could have led to casualties and instead we unleashed the two who not only chased them away but also ensured they don’t assemble again,” a senior Army officer said.
And not to forget Tarzan, another German Shepherd, who plays an important part in the perimeter security especially at night and is very responsive to any suspicious activity.
The handlers of these dogs also recall the services of Mansi, a four-year-old Labrador and a member of Army’s tracker dog unit, who was the first canine to have been selected for a posthumous war honour.
Mansi was honoured with the ‘Mention of Despatches’ certificate. Her name will appear in the Gazette of India for making supreme sacrifice for the nation.
She along with her handler had a successful season in 2015 with three kills to their credit. They were involved in the killing of a terrorist at Kaisuri ridge in Tangdhar area, followed by the gunning down of two militants on July 21, 2015.

Unidentified militants tonight shot dead a Peoples Conference worker in north Kashmir's Kupwara district, police said.
Ghulam Nabi Khoja, who was also an employee in the state's education department, was shot outside his residence in Tralgund village, a police official said here.
He said Khoja was rushed to district hospital Baramulla where doctors declared him brought dead.
The official said Khoja was a worker of Peoples Conference which is led by separatist-turned-mainstream leader and Jammu and Kashmir Minister for Social Welfare Sajad Gani Lone.

Four personnel of paramilitary force SSB were injured on Friday evening when militants attacked their convoy in Zakura area on the outskirts of Srinagar.
Militants fired at the vehicles of Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) which were ferrying the personnel to their camp after performing law and order duties in the city, a security force official said.
He said four SSB personnel sustained injuries in the attack. The injured have been admitted to a hospital for treatment.
Security forces immediately cordoned off the area and launched search operations to track down the militants.
This is the first militant attack in the city since the encounter at Nowhatta on August 15 in which a CRPF commandant was killed and nine other personnel were injured.

Indian troops guarding the LoC retaliated, he said, adding no one was injured in the ceasefire violation. Srinagar: Pakistan Army resorted to unprovoked firing at Indian positions near the Line of Control (LoC) on Sunday in Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir.
Pakistani forces resorted to unprovoked firing at four Indian positions in Naushera sector of Rajouri district early today. The ceasefire violation started at 5:00 am today.
"They used automatics and mortars. Our troops responded effectively using same caliber weapons," a source said.
There was no casualty or damage on the Indian side.
After the surgical strikes conducted by the Indian Army on 29 September against terrorist launch-pads in Azad Kashmir, Pakistan stepped up cross-border firing and violated the Line of Control ceasefire several times.
In the wake of increased ceasefire violation from Pakistan side, the BSF has increased deployment of its troops along the International Border. Locals living in the area near the Line of Control (LoC) have been evacuated and moved to a safer place.

Jammu: A special police officer (SPO) was allegedly stoned to death by two persons in a remote village of Kathua district in Jammu and Kashmir, police said on Saturday.
Hemant Kumar was deployed at Phinter Chowk last night where he had an altercation with the accused who attacked him with stones, a police officer said.
He said that Kumar was left in a pool of blood and when he was shifted to a local hospital doctors declared him brought dead.
He said that the accused have been identified as Naresh Bhadwal and Manveer Lalotra.
He said that a case of murder has been registered and one of the accused has been arrested, while efforts were on to arrest the second accused.

Srinagar: Pakistan Army resorted to unprovoked firing at Indian positions near the Line of Control (LoC) on Sunday in Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir.
Pakistani forces resorted to unprovoked firing at four Indian positions in Naushera sector of Rajouri district early today. The ceasefire violation started at 5:00 am today.
"They used automatics and mortars. Our troops responded effectively using same caliber weapons," a source said.
There was no casualty or damage on the Indian side.
After the surgical strikes conducted by the Indian Army on 29 September against terrorist launch-pads in Azad Kashmir, Pakistan stepped up cross-border firing and violated the Line of Control ceasefire several times.
In the wake of increased ceasefire violation from Pakistan side, the BSF has increased deployment of its troops along the International Border. Locals living in the area near the Line of Control (LoC) have been evacuated and moved to a safer place.

Jammu: A special police officer (SPO) was allegedly stoned to death by two persons in a remote village of Kathua district in Jammu and Kashmir, police said on Saturday.
Hemant Kumar was deployed at Phinter Chowk last night where he had an altercation with the accused who attacked him with stones, a police officer said.
He said that Kumar was left in a pool of blood and when he was shifted to a local hospital doctors declared him brought dead.
He said that the accused have been identified as Naresh Bhadwal and Manveer Lalotra.
He said that a case of murder has been registered and one of the accused has been arrested, while efforts were on to arrest the second accused.
