Indian AF, Ministry Clash Over Missile Buy

I dont think Harpoon uses terrain mapping. In a brochure i read, it said that Harpoon has Intertial Guidance as well as GPS navigation in it.

The latest upgrade of the AGM-84H/K SLAM-ER is the SLAM-ER ATA (Automatic Target Acquisition). This missile can be launched in the general direction of the target and will automatically select a target by comparing the stored reference image with the IIR seeker image without the need for operator intervention. However, the operator can take over control of the missile at any time in the mission.

Again depends on which brochure you read. At least Pakistan is acquiring AGM/UGM/RGM-84Ls.

If harpoon is the one that India wants to buy then it will be the latest version avaiable, that is assured.

But your post says only for target acquisition doesnt it? Its different from terrain mapping ?

Maritime Squadron. Jaguar is Designed for Deep Pentration and SEAD. It does wonders in its role,

Keyser,

I guess you cant carry Brahmos on Cessna, But then again it is the fault of Brahmos. right. you are comparing two different scenarios, just slander a great product like the Brahmos l, simple fact it is in Indian Armed Forces. Bias my friend

Sorry mate but I think it has been over hyped so "great" is not a term I would use. If you want to start a Brahmos thread I will happily tell you why I think so and you will see that supersonic missile (regardless of whom they are used by) do not cut the mustard with me.

The key words are "stored reference image". Something has to guide the Harpoon to the general vicinity of the target (without operator intervention), that has to happen via some sort of terrain matching with the images loaded on memory in the Harpoon.

No, it could simply be GPS aided cruising on a certain predetermined altitude, and when changes have to be made, the new course guidance would be provided. It doesnt say it has terrain mapping and guidance capabilities but just image comparison for the target.

Malay,

It would do some good if you carefully read what it says there....the statement says "without operator intervention"...which means that no new mid-course guidance is provided. There is some level of inherent intelligence in this missile which allows it to match the target area with whats pre-loaded in its memory....now we can go on debating non-issues for the sake of debating or move on to something else.
