The $4.1-billion deal for 10 Boeing C-17 Globemaster-III strategic transports will shortly be signed between the governments of India and the US. Queries sent by India, asking for clarifications on certain costings (which emerged from the Ministry of Finance) have reportedly been addressed to the satisfaction of the contract team. The final foreign military sales (FMS) contract is expected to come up for final approval at the Indian government's apex Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) before contract signature goes through.

When concluded, the single-source ten aircraft deal will be the largest Indo-US military hardware contract yet signed, surpassing the $962.7-million deal for six Lockheed-Martin C-130Js and the $2.1-billion for eight Boeing P-8I Neptune LRMR/ASW aircraft.

.
each may not cost more than $200mln
then it would be $2 bln deal nah? why $4.1bln

.
We need them in numbers for quick transportation of war matterials we also need heavy lift helicopters and transport helicopters

Because of the associated costs in relation to setting up infrastructure and training from the ground up as it is a completely new machine from a completely new company. As the plane is very expensive the associated costs are also very expensive I.e brand new state of the art hangers (like C130s) ground veichles (carts, refuelers, loaders etc) simulators etc etc.

+ does anyone know whether the IAF will build 25 hangers (it is stipulated this is IAF's likely demand) like C130s where 12 hangers were built although initial order was only 6 so follow on order for 6 was pretty much guaranteed.

+ also does know else think it is weird (for Indian defence procurements) just how quickly this program came about? Look at all other defence procurements in last decade they have taken a LONG time, this process seems to haven taken less than a year. Is this Antony's new defence procurement plan in action ie faster procurement process or just a one off due to the nature of the plane and dire need to replace/augment IL-76??

Well IL76 are not going anywhere , atleast till 2026

These aircrafts are undergoing upgrade at present which will extend there life by 15-20 yrs
They also have a tremendous safety record ie non have crashed in 25 yrs of service

C17 Globemaster were selected quickly becoz this was a FMS deal with US and there were no direct competitors for this aircraft
By the way per unit cost of C17 is 280 Million USD or 2.8 billion USD for 10 aircrafts
Remaining 1.3 billion is for setting Training and Maintenance infrastructure as well as spares and 10 yr maintenance contract with Boing

It could be argued that none have crashed because of the poor sortie rate these planes maintain. I hear the engine reliability is spamming and they have to be stripped and checked every 2-3 flights!
