The petroleum minister of India has said that New Delhi is willing to sell gas to Pakistan.

“Our public sector units are strong enough to sell LNG to Pakistan’s domestic sector at a cheaper rate than what the neighbouring nation is buying at currently,” BusinessLine newspaper quoted Pradhan as having said.

Due to diplomatic and geopolitical issues involved, the proposal to sell gas to Pakistan was on hold, Pradhan said while speaking at an event in the Indian capital.

According to the deal, the LNG to be sold to Pakistan would be imported through terminals in Maharashtra or Gujarat and transported to Jalandhar using GAIL’s existing pipeline network. It will then have to be gassified to send to Pakistan.

India has some serious energy concerns of its own, not as dire as some other countries but energy security for India is a very pressing concern.

India is not Qatar or Saudi Arabia, countries which sit upon oceans of crude oil. The financial benefits, if any, of importing crude oil and selling gas to neighboring countries is stupid to say the least.

Gas prices affect the entire economy. Goods and commodities are moved across the country on vehicles. The higher the cost of fuel, higher the cost of transportation and as a result higher the cost of commodities that are moved across. It is simple logic which every Indian is aware of since childhood.

Countries usually make a business by exporting minerals, products they have a surplus of. How would it sound to you if Saudi Arabia buys coal from India to sell in Middle East?

Pakistan is already in talks with Iran over gas pipeline and they have closer contacts with SA and other Islamic states. What possible gains can Indian have by doing a deal like this?

Iran had proposed a gas pipeline project, a MASSIVE one in all scales, which will connect Iran-Pakistan-India. THAT deal if finalised would have taken care of almost every energy need of the country. India backed out for two obvious reasons. American pressure, they had issues with Iran and offered nuclear deal and the other being Pakistan. Indian think tanks were nervous about Indian energy needs coming through Pakistan and held hostage - much like NATO trucks.

Now when all is said and done we have this drama.
