Indian Defense Minister A. K. Antony has welcomed the expansion of defense cooperation with the Islamic Republic of Iran in different sectors.During a meeting on Saturday, the Indian minister and Iran’s Ambassador to New Delhi Gholam-Reza Ansari stressed the development of bilateral defense cooperation, exploring ways to expand relations in this regard.
Pointing to achievements made by Iran and India in the defense and military industry, the Iranian envoy expressed Tehran’s readiness to enhance relations and exchange experience with New Delhi.

In recent years, Iran has made great achievements in its defense sector and attained self-sufficiency in producing essential military equipment and systems.

The Iranian Army is equipped with a wide range of domestically-manufactured military and defense equipment, including ground surveillance radar systems, personnel carriers, drones, destroyers, submarines, and missile-launching frigates.

The Islamic Republic has also held several military drills to enhance the defense capabilities of its armed forces and to test modern military tactics and equipment.

Tehran has repeatedly assured other countries that its military might poses no threat to other states, insisting that the Islamic Republic’s defense doctrine is entirely based on deterrence.

It is a welcome move. While Tel Aviv may not appreciate it, we should go ahead with this cooperation. Why? Because Iranians are as much stakeholders as we are in Afghanistan's future stability. And if Pakistan increases its meddling in Afghanistan post NATO withdrawal which they will eventually, then we will need to ensure that our assets are safe and our interests are not compromised.

In the worst case scenario, we might have a scenario where Iranians and our forces will be sharing intelligence for both the militaries to track and hunt down wanted Taliban. So military cooperation with this perspective is a welcome.

Counter-terror tactics and special weapon tactics should be the theme of all our training because it is very likely that our and/or Iranian special units might be operating against Talibunnies in an urban warfare setup.
