India way behind neighbours in gender equality: Human Development Report

Business Line : Industry & Economy / Economy : India way behind neighbours in gender equality: Human Development Report

New Delhi, Nov. 2:

It may be an emerging economic powerhouse, but as far as the state of women is concerned, India needs a lot of catching up to do with neighbours such as Pakistan and Bangladesh.

According to the Human Development Report 2011, India ranks 129 out of 146 countries on the Gender Inequality Index, below Bangladesh and Pakistan, which are ranked at 112 and 115, respectively.

“In fact, Afghanistan is the only country ranked below India in the South Asian region on the Gender Inequality Index. Among BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) nations, India has the highest inequalities in human development,” said Ms Seeta Prabhu, Senior Advisor, United Nations Development Programme.

Releasing the report here on Wednesday, the Union Minister of Rural Development, Mr Jairam Ramesh, said, “The representation of women in the Indian Parliament is very low, a meagre 10-11 per cent. In Bangladesh and Pakistan, their representation is much higher. However, if we were to include in the index women's representation at the Panchayat level, then our ranking will shoot up.”

He said while fertility rates were a cause of concern, low participation of women in the labour force was more due to them opting for higher education.

According to the report, the human development index (HDI) positions India at 134 out of 187 countries and territories. Bangladesh and Pakistan are ranked at 146 and 145, respectively.

On the Multidimensional Poverty Index (deprivations such as in health, education and living standards) 53.7 per cent Indians have been placed in the bracket of multi-dimensionally poor (612 million), the largest concentration of such poor persons in the world.

“We have made rapid strides in education, while in health our record is mixed. Sanitation, however, is a big washout. Fifty-eight per cent of the world's open defecation is attributed to India,” Mr Ramesh said, and called for larger public spending.

Human Development Index rank
India : 134
Pakistan: 145
Bangladesh: 146

I hope you guys know maths !

I agree with gender Inequality index though

Title is not misleading... you understanding is... India is a backward country in terms of treatment towards woman. Thats why it has been placed way behind Bangladesh and Pakistan. N regarding the ranking India has downgraded 15 level then the previous year of 119.

You are right... Norway is worst in developments and living standards because it is at number 01 and has the maximum HDI!.RIGHT?

You seriously need to revise HDI..

Norway is at the top. India fares better than Pakistan & Bangladesh in HDI. Leave it. You wont understand !

I am talking about HDI Ranks. India is better than BD & Pakistan

"In South Asia, Bangladesh only fared better than Nepal, which was ranked 157th. India ranked 134, Sri Lanka 97, the Maldives 109 and Bhutan 141."

There are certain things Pakistan is better at than India (poverty levels, malnutrition, access to sanitation, life expectancy, income distribution), while there are certain things India is better at than Pakistan (education, infant mortality rate, healthcare) in the HDI index. The factors India is better at have more weight than the ones Pakistan is better at. The overall result is that India is slightly better at the HDI than Pakistan, but not by much.

But this thread isn't about the HDI. This is about gender inequality, which is more prevalent in India than in Pakistan, but the situation isn't too good in Pakistan either, & isn't too different from India's.

Bangladesh's score higher, ranking down

My bad, I am sorry.... That post of mine was not for you, that was for "sami". I don't know how it turned to you instead of Sami.

This is how it goes - Country with maximum HDI is ranked number 01 while country with lowest HDI is ranked number last.

India : 134
Pakistan: 145
Bangladesh: 146

This ranking means India better than Pakistan and Pakistan better than Bangladesh.

Normally I am rather cynical, but I think the Government of Sri Lanka has actually done something commendable (for a change) through its public health + economic policies, especially given the fact that Sri Lanka has been ravaged by war for close to 30 years. During this period, they have managed to reduce poverty, continue to provide universal education to the population, improve health indicators, implement family planning policies that work, increase per capita income, provide equality between genders and now, after the end of the war, the economy is booming and growing at 8-9%. However, investment in health and education is still under par and this needs to be addressed; for example, according to the budget defence gets more more money that either health or education which to me makes no sense.
