Actually to tell you.. Even my accent is better for Kerala (Thanks to my Keralite friends and their training for "Zh" sound) but my wife was a big help there to communicate with local people as she spend her 5 years in Chennai due to studies. As there are many words common in Tamil and Malyalam "Tamil Kunjam Kunjam" worked for us...

Actually i think its not 'kunjam' and 'konjam' is the right pronunciation. but the substitute word for 'konjam' is 'kurachu' in malayalam. so i think even if u know Tamil u will find it difficult to understand malayalam.
