NEW DELHI: India and the United States have sealed an agreement to jointly develop protective gear for soldiers against biological and chemical warfare, and another on building generators, defence officials said on Wednesday.

The projects were cleared as US Defence Secretary Ash Carter held talks with Indian leaders to expand security ties between the countries that were on opposite sides of the Cold War but have since drawn closer against the rising weight of China.

The United States has become one of the top sources of weapons for the Indian military, upstaging Russia in recent years, and now under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's "Make-in-India" programme offered joint development and production of military technologies.

While the two projects approved are modest in scale, India and the United States are also exploring collaboration at the higher end of technology, Carter told reporters.

"We have big ambitions, and jet engines, aircraft carrier technology are big projects that we're working very hard on," he said.

Carter is due to sign a new 10-year defence cooperation pact with his Indian counterpart Manohar Parikkar later on Wednesday that will include cooperation in maritime security, another official said.

The two countries conduct annual naval exercises in the Indian Ocean where China has made forays in recent years in a sign of its expanding reach.

Both the project on protective clothing for soldiers as well developing the next generation power source for the battlefield will each have $1 million in funding shared equally by the two sides, a US defence official said.

"We've negotiated texts, we've agreed to texts and they'll be signed into effect at the end of this month. We went from flash to bang, meaning from the joint statement in January to agreed to and signed texts in just under five months," the official said.

The other two projects under the Defense Technology and Trade Initiative that Carter himself launched before his elevation as defense secretary relate to Raven mini-UAVs and surveillance modules for the C-130J military transport plane.

India is also eyeing US aircraft launch technology for a carrier it plans to build to replace an ageing British warship. The two sides have set up a working group to explore cooperation and the defence official said military officials will meet later this month in the United States.

"We have the pre-eminent aircraft carriers in the world. They are excited about possible collaboration. There are multiple areas of possible collaboration. It's a huge platform," the US official said.

As expected...... NOTHING for strategic partner India........ you could have just asked us, we could have told you that..........
Jet engine you say? I say NEVER........ you say EMALS, I say NEVER........... in fact, you'll get NOTHING other than off-the-shelf items, that too, that are not strategic in nature.......... US of A hasn't survived for so long just because it's a big cuddly country, they have, because they are tough sob's to crack! :D

He has not denied....anyway we will float a tender and get the high temp alloys for a jet engine chamber from eurojet....they already want to partner with us.
EMALS is something the US itself proposed.

EMALS maybe, however, it does not run on batteries, you know that, right? Regarding, ToT on 'high temp alloys', calm down son, it isn't happening, trust you me, this is MY domain....... even if you were to auction Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, together! :D

We already have a nuke reactor miniaturized (which is the only limitation for EMALS) in INS arihant.

I'm not a political scientist....and I know what is being asked is a very very strategic secret...as I have said....GE4xx series is ending it's life.... EJ is already interested in Joint IP (if memory serves me right).....
even if you were to auction Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, together!
MP is a very good state .... produces more grain than whole Pak...and produces 40% of India's organic agricultural output.
UP has so many problems....uska ka bhaav to chammani bhi nahi hoga :rofl::rofl::rofl:

As is clearly visible there is a shift in US policy towards India and Pakistan. We should have played our cards right. A relationship in the war on terror with the US should mean that India and US are not allowed to sign defence agreements or nuclear agreements without the will of Islamabad.

We should have threatened to quit the war on terror if the US maintains ties with are foremost enemy. But sadly our government is doing nothing to curtail this differential treatment of India and Pakistan. Let us note that the US denied us a nuclear deal similar to which was allowed to India. If the americans betray Pakistan again like they did with the Presler amendment we should threaten to quit the war on terror and allow any miscreant to leave Pakistan to fight in Afghanistan. At least we won't lose our precious troops and civilians in this war.

America is a traitorous country which typically backstabs nations which it has previously called allies. Without our support the Afghan Soviet war could not be won but America is keen to belittle our sacrifices and pick India as a friend. There should be a clear response and a strong foreign policy at home.

Looks like Hypission is talking from his a-hole.

Regarding Engine technical discussions for AMCA engine are going on between DRDO and GE.
DRDO will present the preliminary tech requirements to GE next week

MoD will clear the deal after Tech discussion are over.

As for EMALS Indian Navy will send the details needed for it such as weight class of the fighters supposed to operate from AC and sorties expected in a day.
A Navy team will visit US to witness an active demo.
