Global majors making a beeline to expand R&D ops, says report

MUMBAI, JUNE 27:




India’s transformation into a global R&D hub is epitomised by the strides the country is making in attracting R&D investments in the electronics and IT segment, beating the likes of US and Germany.

As per the latest report from US-based HfS Research, India leads with 30 per cent of the global ER&D centre announcements.

“From April to December 2015, we found details of 190 ER&D centre announcements. India leads the pack with 57 of those ER&D centre announcements. Other prominent ER&D destinations are the US, China, Singapore, France, Israel, the UK, South Korea and Ireland,” Pareekh Jain, research director at HfS research, told BusinessLine.

Interestingly, one-third of Indian ER&D centre announcements were driven by ‘Make in India’, as per the report.

“Of the 57 ER&D centre announcements in India, 19 are driven by the ‘Make in India’ initiative. Many enterprises that plan to start or increase manufacturing in India are also opening or expanding their ER&D centres to design products specifically for the Indian market,” it said.

Some of the enterprises that invested in setting up their R&D centres in India as an extension of their manufacturing plans include auto majors such as Rolls-Royce and Michelin to electronics manufacturers such as Foxconn, Ericsson and LeEco.

China, Germany and Taiwan lead in ‘Make in India’ driven Indian ER&D centre announcements. Together these three countries account for more than two-thirds of the ER&D centre announcements. Other investing countries are Denmark, France, Japan, Spain, Sweden, and the UK.

Beyond low-cost
India is already home to ER&D centres of more than 1,000 enterprises. But most of the work that happened at these centres in the past was mostly low-cost engineering work for global markets. However, now these centres are also being used for designing products specific to Indian market.

“The ‘Make in India’ programme has accelerated this trend. India is becoming one of the biggest and fastest growing emerging markets especially in sectors such as electronic systems, electrical machinery and automobiles.

Global enterprises are investing their ER&D resources to design and manufacture products specifically for the Indian market. So, ‘Make in India’ combined with Designed in India and Sell in India is an attractive value proposition which enterprises can’t ignore,” Jain said.

Over nine lakh, including PhD holders, engineers apply for 14,000 posts for constables in Madhya Pradesh
BHOPAL: Over nine lakh aspirants, including those with PhD, post graduate and engineering degrees, have applied for the post of about 14,000 police constables in Madhya Pradesh.

Of the 9.24 lakh candidates, 1.19 lakh are graduates, 14,562 are post graduates, 9,629 engineers and 12 with Doctorate of Philosophy (PhD), according to the data of Madhya Pradesh Professional Examination Board (MPPEB), which will conduct the examination.

The minimum qualification for the post is Higher Secondary.

"There are candidates with PhD and engineering degrees who have applied for the post," said Bhaskar Lakshakar, Director, MPPEB.

He said the examination is scheduled to be held on July 17.

"Our job is to conduct the examination. The analysis of the profile of applicants is beyond our mandate," Bhaskar said when asked to elaborate on the profile of these degree holders.


Over five lakh youth, who have passed Higher Secondary or Class XII, are also among the applicants. There are 3,438 diploma holders too.

There are about 2.58 lakh aspirants, belonging to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, who have passed classes VIII and above as eligibility criteria for them is low.

The post offers a salary in the pay band of Rs 5,200 to Rs 20,200 with an additional grade pay of Rs 1,900 per month.

I am interested in knowing why so much investment is failing to provide jobs to such an educated people...there is a disconnect. Because if you see USA and China both need man power so much so that they have to import skilled man power...while in India...thousands of people with PhD degrees are unable to get jobs of even porters and peons...why it is not translating into jobs?

It is less to do with joblessness, more to do with it being a government job. After the advent of private sector in India, jobs in public sector has come down drastically. However, there are many lazy people who prefer government job for its security, no work, benefits till death etc..The demand supply mismatch is the reason why so many apply for government jobs

Really you mean to say a PhD person would prefer the job of a coolie to a job in a multi national company? Is that you are saying because if the person was so lazy...how would did he get a PhD degree in the first place?

If you look at it properly it makes perfect sence why Investment in reserch is coming to India,India has the required talent and manpower.
Now regarding why everyone is not getting job,thats because at the present time India produces more graduates and PG every year than they can provide employement to.

the companies who set up shop here come not to employ everyone ,but to get the people who can do the job.thats true for every country.

PhD in what subject? If it something as on culture or tribals studies. It is hard to transfer those skills to private sector

One always has to take anything coming out of India with a pinch of salt because it has an undertone of supremacist competition but it only outdone itself proving stupid..Countries like US, EU and China started in the R/D race far before India was known in the international economics of foreign investment was even possible in India therefore former countries have a mature base already established..where as India is just starting in the race and represents a virgin market therefore for number of years the capital inflows will be higher...

Most of the brand names mentioned are not known to invent anything significant in India so far..so it might just be back offices for process large amount of research data due to mass availability of cheap qualified HR in India...

You have a valid point..But you have to understand that all the educated graduates and post graduates are talented enough to be invested in any R&D company...And on top of that we are a nation with around 130 crore people...So we will have a situation where poverty will exist and also rich and middle class will survive...In the same way, Indian born people will be CEO of top notch company and also PHD of Major universities will be struggling to get any job..This is the contradiction that every country has to face it...But that does not take away the fact that India is an emerging market for R&D Market..

So i would prefer some Pakistan member should come back with some positive news from Pakistan side and what is happening from Pakistan itself...We always have to remember, any positive news from India or Pakistan is not necessarily bad news for others....So cheer up mate...and post some positive news from Pakistan...We will be happy to appreciate it and respond it a positive way...
