KOLKATA: State-owned defence shipbuilder Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd (GRSE) is eyeing an export order of around Rs 1,400 crore for supplying 14 fast patrol boats to Vietnam.

"Tomorrow a Vietnamese delegation is coming to see our facility and to discuss on procuring about 14 fast patrol boats for coastal surveillance," GRSE chairman and managing director Admiral A K Verma said here today at MCC Chamber of Commerce and Industry during an interactive session with the Ambassador of Vietnam.

Verma said tentative cost for the boats could be in the range of Rs 100 crore each.

GRSE officials said the Vietnamese delegation had also visited the L&T and Pipapav shipyards, but it was not clear whether it was for the procurement of patrol boats.

GRSE has already produced 18 similar fast patrol boats for the coast guard in the past.

"We have the design, knowhow and capability to produce. We have done in the past and are very hopeful to get this export order," Verma said.

The contract was expected to be finalised by the year end and if it sailed through, then it would be the second export order for GRSE after an offshore class vessel worth Rs 358 crore order for Mauritius.

Vietnam Ambassador Ton Sinh Thanh said India and Vietnam hold a lot of potential in bilateral trade and his country imports huge quantity of cotton yarn and fabric and India could increase its share.

"We have imported USD 350 million worth of yarn and USD three billion of fabrics. While, India exported just 155 million worth of yarn and USD 50 million of fabric," Thanh said.

He emphasised that India and Vietnam could have some special economic zones or trade agreement to boost the relationship.

The article is stressing sale of defense products but the Vietnamese Ambassador is talking about Yarn and Fabric????
WTF?

Need more trade, economic and military cooperation with Vietnam.

This is a welcome development...but more is needed.

Vietnamese Ambassador painting this news as economic thing rather than military one, to assuage the burns caused elsewhere ;)

@Carlosa @Yorozuya @Soryu

I think the Viet ambassador wanted to intensify the burn...for no reason, he went off topic and said Vietnam want to import yarn from India and not from China anymore. He was quoted saying this in another news report.
