Russian Helicopters plans to sign a contract for supplying 48 Mi-17V-5 utility helicopters to India in 2016, the company’s Deputy CEO Alexander Shcherbinin said Tuesday.

"In 2015, 3 helicopters were supplied under earlier made contracts. We plan to reach agreements with the Indian side on supply of a new batch of rotorcraft in 2016," Shcherbinin was quoted as saying by TASS at the Singapore Airshow 2016 today, adding that the issue is about 48 Mi-17V-5 helicopters.

According to Shcherbinin, the contract will be fulfilled through Rosoboronexport.

In July 2015, the Indian Air Force (IAF) had reportedly put up a proposal to acquire 48 additional Mi-17 V5 helicopters from Russia for approximately $1.1 billion (Rs 6,980 crore) for replacing the existing Mi-8s.

Mi-17 V5, an upgrade of Mi-17, has state-of-the-art avionics and onboard navigation systems. It is a glass cockpit variant – the first-of-its-kind to get inducted into the IAF. It has autopilot that is compatible with the latest generation (Gen-III) night vision goggles. The aircraft can carry different types of armament loads to be used effectively in the armed role.
