NEW DELHI - India has decided to remove several thousand troops from the northern state of Jammu and Kashmir, which for two decades has been the scene of low-intensity battle between the Army and terrorists crossing the border from Pakistan.

Refusing to give a specific number, a senior Indian Defence Ministry official said a "large number" of troops will be withdrawn from Jammu and Kashmir in phases.

An estimated 350,000 Indian troops are stationed in Jammu and Kashmir, along with 200,000 paramilitary forces.

The troop reduction will begin this month, the Defence Ministry official said, adding that the paramilitary forces there will take over from the troops.

Sources in the Indian Army said troops stationed along the Pakistan border in Jammu and Kashmir are as vigilant as ever despite the planned withdrawal.

The Indian troop pullout from Jammu and Kashmir coincides with media reports here that China has taken over some Indian territory along the disputed Line of Actual Control that serves as a border between the two countries.

Indian Defence Minister A.K. Antony said in Srinagar, the capital of Jammu and Kashmir, that there has been no change in the India-China border

You must read between the lines. GoI has shifted its resources against Pakistan on the western border - helping TTP and Balochistan insurgents. Thus this is not necessarily a good news.

No sir, there are enough reserves available already to push in the Indian western front. This move sounds genuine considering the fact that violence levels have sclaed down considerably.

I think two reasons:

- India realized that power of freedom can't be stopped by Force so they decided this. Hope so we will see a good news about Kashmiris too.

- India want to open another point against Pakistan, so it is bad news that terrorism will increase in Pakistan.

First one is very good and second one is very bad

So i think always hope for Good .

Or the third one which states that

- There is no freedom movement in kashmir. All this hogwash, delusion and deception was created by Non- STATE-ED actors in order to keep this money-ignited movement going on which some other country couldn't capture by wars.

And when that country is distracted by ,nonetheless, its own strategic assets, no wonder such movements which doesn't even have remote chance of attaining anything becomes trival.

I wonder why 2007-2009 was most peaceful period in kashimr. Couldn't champions of conspiracy theory here find any correlation?

It is thread for reasons of Indian Army pulled Troops not about Kashmir movement.

Troops are there, to defend in case of terrorist attack. If the attacks reduces you can reduce the troops. That is the simple reason. The same thing happened in Punjab. Hope this continues.

IMHO, I believe the army needs to be redeployed to the border or their primary bases while the paramilitary and JK police take over the anti-terrorist activities...

In fact, last few attacks like the Srinagar one's were successfully responded by CRPF and JK police which is testimony to their training and skills....
