AFP: India to make oil payment to Iran via Turkey

NEW DELHI — India expects to make a first payment to Iran through Turkey for billions of dollars in unpaid crude oil bills as it seeks to avert a cut-off in fuel shipments, the oil minister said Friday.

Tehran warned late last month it would halt exports to India from next month unless the payments dispute was resolved.

Oil Minister S. Jaipal Reddy said New Delhi expects to pay via Turkey the first tranche of arrears to Iran, which supplies 12 percent of energy-hungry India's crude needs.

However, Reddy told reporters in New Delhi "we can't fix time frames" in response to queries about when an alternate payment mechanism would be finalised to pay the bills which total at least $5 billion.

India is Iran's second largest client after China and absorbs about 20 percent of its crude exports.

But Indian firms have been struggling for more than six months to pay Tehran due to international banking sanctions imposed on the Islamic republic over its nuclear programme.

Reddy added he was hopeful Iran would continue to supply crude to India in August, but added New Delhi has already lined up alternative arrangements with other crude suppliers as a contingency measure.

The Financial Times quoted a senior Iranian oil official earlier this week as saying Tehran would continue crude exports as the two countries were seeking to work out payment methods through new accounts and barter deals.

Rupee accounts could help pay the cost of Iran's imports from India which include steel, food and electronic goods, the Financial Times said.

Earlier this week, Saudi Arabia agreed to sell three million barrels of extra crude oil to India to offset a possible supply cut, the Press Trust of India reported.

Annual trade between India and Iran stands at an estimated $12 billion, with India purchasing about 400,000 barrels of Iranian crude per day.

The Financial Times said if payment was arranged through barter deals, it would be the first time since the 1980-88 Iran-Iraq war that the Islamic republic had used such a means to be paid for its oil exports.

Reddy said earlier this month alternative supplies were being arranged from countries such as Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Iraq as well as from Latin America.

soooo..... india is going to pay with turkish lira?

Good news, we cannot hold back the Iranian Money. Iran is one of the most friendly nation to India.

Its not that we are holding their money, because our oil cos dont have money. But its because of currency issues.IF Iran agrees to Rupee trading, it would have been a done deal years ago.

That seems to be the only option left considering the loose cannons in Iran's top regime that have practically transformed all the countries having global reserve currencies as standard, as their enemies.

For future payments, I hope Iranian government has something more productive and business-like for its customers rather than threats to halt oil supplies: Something like a preferred alternate reserve currency that its loose cannot President doesn't blow to smithereens.

Dollar is weakening alright but then either they should accept Rupees as a currency of payment or consider cosying up with the Europeans and Americans.

Why cant they just make the payment directly to Iran in forigen currencies cash, goods, raw materials and such? The issue has been lingering for too long and I am wondering that India, once the champion of barter trade has forgotten its own art?

Its so sad that india is wiling to let the usa mess around with iran-india relation.

Like what? Mate, with due respect, US is global reserve currency. Your leaders refuse to acknowledge it and create stumbling blocks. Euro was removed as a medium under severe US pressure to European Union---not us. That left us with two options: either consider Rupee payments or choose another neutral alternative. Turkey seems to finally be the option.

So who created this vacuum? West? Well in a way yes because till the dominate the world, they will play by rules they make expecting others to follow. While Iranian independence is appreciable, you are going overboard with the whole anti-west factor. There is simply no reason to hurt international trade and expect that other countries would find it comfortable to trade in local reserves especially since Dollar has been around for so long and is convenient.

The power balance is changing slowly, but till then it is not wise to play around playing the eastern warrior. There are other ways to express independence than regularly saber-rattling just like the Bush you criticize.

Fortunately, Turks have agreed. Otherwise how much difficulty it would have been to make the payments. Your government should consider these things before going all guns on all western countries.

Because Iran has different levels of reserves for each currency and we may or may not be having so much of that particular currency in reserve. Barter system reduces the value of those particular goods in their own trade cycle when attempted to barter in such big deals. This isn't 10,000 BC. Even the Soviets had to accept Rupee payments against our purchases.

If Iran wanted to accept Rupee payments, it would have been done along long time back.
