NEW DELHI, India (CNN) -- India next month will launch a new "remote-sensing" satellite built with Israeli "inputs," the Indian Space Research Organization said Saturday.

ISRO spokesman S. Satish told CNN that it would be a radar-imaging satellite equipped with all-weather capability.

"It's an Indian satellite built with inputs from the Israeli aerospace industry. It will be launched from a PSLV in April," Satish said. A PSLV is a polar satellite launch vehicle.

Satish did not confirm reports of any possible use of the rocket for defense or spying purposes.

"As far as ISRO is concerned, this (spying) is not one of the applications," he remarked.

Satish, however, explained that the new satellite would be capable of locating sites during nights and during thick cloud cover.

Why is this on the "War on Terror" sub forum , Please care to look around as I assume there is already a thread on this in "India Defence".

Thanks.

Wha???
built by israel?
doesnt make sense! those of us who have followed the indian space program...would know that the indian imaging satellites are very good...the IRS satellites testify this fact.
why the heck would we not go ahead and convert the 100X100 to 10X 10 resolution...i eman it shunt be that hard...

Old news but important....

Thu, Mar 26

Bangalore, Mar 26 (PTI) The Indian Space Research Organisation today asserted that the Radar Imaging Satellite (RISAT), expected to be launched by the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle from Sriharikota spaceport next month, is not an Israeli one. Denying reports in a section of the press that RISAT is from Israel, ISRO Chairman G Madhavan Nair said it is an Indian spacecraft.

Asked if RISAT is an Israeli satellite or an Indian one, the Secretary in the Department of Space said "we don't launch any Israeli satellite. It's an Indian satellite".

On whether Israel has contributed to the satellite, Nair said "no. That many countries contribute, not only Israel.

It's our satellite". Asked if Israel supplied Synthetic Aperture Radar for the satellite, he said "those finer details.

We will talk when we make the launch". He said the exact date for the launch has not been finalised.

"It could be within two weeks or so", he said, adding that preparations are in progress at the launch pad. "May be sometime in the middle of next week, we will fix the exact date", he said.

ISRO guys are very talented no doubt on that. Israel helped us to make/(copy) the satellite.
------

At a World Conference, the heads of States of all countries were boasting about their technical know-how. So they all decided that to prove their boasts, each country should show an engineering feat to the world.
In a few days, the U.S.A made a hollow tube of fiberglass, a millimeter in diameter. It was then sent to the Russia. They put a conducting wire in the tube. The Japanese, to prove their superiority, bored a hole through the wore.
Finally, it was sent to India. It came back without any apparent change.
"Well, what have you done?" asked everybody.
"Look here," said the Indian, putting the wire under a microscope. Clearly visible were the words "Made in India."

Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) is built by ISRAEL. The US, Europe, Canada and Israel are among the few countries that have the SAR capability.

Screaming Skull,

ISRO is a great organization. I am not trying to downgrade ISRO. The chairman of ISRO is just doing his job.

ISRO needs money. They have proved themselves many times. But the Budget of ISRO is very little. Our Government should increase the Budget of ISRO.

India to launch spy satellite on April 20

BANGALORE: India will launch a spy satellite from Sriharikota spaceport on April 20 primarily to keep an eye on its borders round-the-clock and help
the government in anti-infiltration and anti-terrorist operations.

The 300-kg radar-imaging satellite has been built by Israel and is set to blast-off on board India's home-grown rocket, the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV).

This remote-sensing advanced imaging satellite, to be positioned 550 km above the earth, has all-weather capabilities.

It carries Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) payload, which can take images during day, night and all weather conditions including under cloud cover, a capability that Indian satellites do not have.

Given the sensitiveness of the venture, the Indian Space Research Organisation is tight-lipped over the mission, not giving out many details.

A senior ISRO official, who spoke to PTI on condition of anonymity, said that the significance of the satellite is its all-weather capability.

"It will be primarily used for defence and surveillance. The satellite also has good application in the area of disaster management and in managing cyclones, floods and agriculture-related activities," he said.

Bangalore-headquartered ISRO launched Tecsar surveillance satellite of Israel Aerospace Industries from Sriharikota in January last year.

"When we launched the Israeli (Tecsar) satellite, we found that it's a good satellite. Then we asked them to build one for us. It can penetrate through the clouds and take pictures even at night," the official said.

Anusat, built by Chennai-based Anna University, would be the co-passenger on board PSLV-C12, which is expected to take off between 6 am and 6.30 am on April 20, officials tracking the preparations said.

the bold part ..YEAH I THINK IT WOULD HAVE BEEN DONE BUT WHAT BOUT ALL-WEATHER AND NIGHT CAPABILITY...IN 10X10 NOT IN SUNLIGHT ...this might answer it ..i suppose

The spy satellite falls under the RISAT (Radar Imaging Satellite) category of satellites being developed by ISRO. There are two satellites in this series namely RISAT-1 and RISAT-2.

RISAT-2 is the one which will be launched first this month. It has been developed with an Israel supplied Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) since, the indigenous SAR to be used in RISAT-1 has been delayed.

Initially, there was no plan for a RISAT-2, but after the Bombay blasts GoI urged ISRO to launch a spy satellite asap. Hence, Israeli help on SAR was sought.

Anyway the indigenous SAR has progressed well and RISAT-1 too will be launched latest by year end.

The following two links give more info on RISAT-1 and 2 and the differences between the two.

dude...IRS is an all weather sat....it's a multi purpose sat....the focus wasnt on the resolution...but the chandrayaan probe had a very high resoultion camera...that does show that we have the capability....i smell something fishy here...somebody's swiss account is getting stuffed with the greens...
