CHENNAI, AUGUST 3:
India will assist Sri Lanka in the establishment of an Engineering and Automobile components Special Economic Zone, near Trincomalee, on the Eastern coast of the island country.

The proposed zone will also have a skill training institute. This was disclosed in Sri Lanka by Indian Union Minister for Commerce, Industry and Textiles, Anand Sharma.

The idea is to promote exports to production chains in India.

Sharma also said that India and Sri Lanka would work together towards the establishment of a pharmaceutical manufacturing hub in Sri Lanka, “to capitalise on the vast strides made by the Indian pharma industry in meeting the quality drug requirements worldwide at affordable prices.”

Joint Task Force for implementation

It has also been agreed to set up a joint task force, which will submit its report within 90 days and would work on how to set up the two SEZs.

Sharma is on a visit to Sri Lanka to take part in “The India Show – Land of Limitless Opportunities” meet, in Colombo.

A press release from the government of India says that the constitution of the joint task force would be finalised before Sharma leaves Sri Lanka.

Not seeking reciprocity

Speaking at the conference, Sharma said that India was “not seeking reciprocity in trade and economic relationship with Sri Lanka.” He assured Sri Lanka of preferential access to the Indian market.

India and Sri Lanka have set a target to double the bilateral trade between the two countries to $ 10 billion by 2015.

Why India is so generous towards its ungrateful neighbors?? :hitwall:

We should act like china talk big but do nothing for friends and allies in reality. Like china don't help any of its allies and friend economically ever.......... just look at its best ally and friend north korea the third world country and also a example closer home.

Has Srilanka agreed to indian plan or its just indian proposal? I am sure SriLanka will be reviewing security implication on such indian move. Because of indian and more specifically infiltration and terror exported from Tamil Naidu, Srilanka lost thousands of people and lost 3 decades from its growth path. SriLanka could find other partners like China, Pakistan, Korea and even Bangladesh to setup manufacturing hub in that region and create much needed job. That will be much more security friendly and will acheive economic goal. Would our resident Srilankan friends comment on the prospect?

Sri Lanka signed an agreement with Sri Lanka Gateway Industries (Private) Limited, who has agreed to invest US$ 4 billion to develop a special industrial zone for heavy industries in the Trincomale district.

Accordingly, Sri Lanka Gateway Industries, a consortium made out of several local and overseas firms will develop, operate and manage the special industrial zone for heavy industries in the Trincomalee District.

BOI says, the proposed project will see the development of a Deep Water Jetty, Bulk Commodities Terminal with Stockpiling and Blending Capabilities, a Power Generation Plant, and a host of other heavy Industries and complementary industries.

The US$ 4 billion will be invested in three phases.

Chairman of the Sri Lanka Gateway Industries (Private) Limited, Prabath Nanayakkara said companies based in Brazil, Australia, Japan, China, India and USA are taking part in the development of the proposed industrial zone.

Sri Lanka has achieved excellent results in its N–E rehabilitation : UN

Sri Lanka has achieved excellent results in its North – East rehabilitation and resettlement programme and post-conflict economic development drive, UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) and response division director John Ging said.

“Sri Lanka should share these experiences with other countries,” he said at a meeting with senior advisor to the President and Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa.

Ging on a three-day official visit to Sri Lanka, met Minister Rajapaksa at the Economic Development Ministry on Tuesday.

The minister said Sri Lanka was able to complete most of the rehabilitation and reconstruction work successfully because of the help from the international community including UN agencies and INGOs as well as local institutions and the public.

We have resettled IDPs who were displaced as a result of the last phase of the humanitarian operation.

Ging said OCHA will provide assistance to resettle all IDPs.

He said he has confidence that Sri Lanka can solve the IDPs’ problems soon.

“I have travelled to many countries with similar problems. But I can say Sri Lanka’s progress after the end of the conflict is tremedous,” Ging said.

Please stop acting like a BNP party worker, its seriously sounds foolish. India,China and South Korea have the ability to set up world class manufacturing hub, but since when BD has joined the league?

I believe that setting up of such JV's will bring our neighbors close to us..the trust factor would build up to more comfortable levels.
But at the same time development in your own country should not be neglected. I have faith that this GOI/future GOI, though walking on a razor thin line, would take a balanced decision.
Here's a toast to a developed Indian Sub Continent :)
