The Indian government reportedly will spend $2.5 billion to purchase C295 tactical transport aircraft from Airbus Defense, multiple news outlets reported.

On Tuesday, Hindustan Times has reported that Airbus Defence and Space and Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) will jointly execute the project to equip the Indian Air Force with new medium transport aircraft under the Make-in-India initiative in the aerospace sector.

The possible deal, which covers 56 military transport aircraft, has an estimated value of $2.5 billion.

The new-generation tactical airlifter will replace Indian Air Force fleet of aging Avro-748 planes.

Under the contract, Airbus will supply the first 16 aircraft in flyaway condition while the remaining 40 will be assembled in India by TASL, the officials said.

The procurement of 56 C-295 from Airbus with participation of an Indian production agency for the manufacture of 40 aircraft (out of total 56) in India is at financial approval stage and the contract is likely to be signed in the near future, the defence ministry said in its year-end review.

“The case is first of its kind which envisages participation of private companies and would prove to be a boost for our defence industry,” the ministry said.

While the C-295s are meant to replace the Avro-748 transport planes, the new aircraft will also be suitable for demanding roles that the AN-32 currently undertakes, as previously reported by Hindustan Times.

The Avro-748 entered service in the early 1960s and has been long due for replacement, said Air Vice Marshal Manmohan Bahadur (retd), additional director general, Centre for Air Power Studies.

“The replacement C-295 project has been in the works for the past eight years and has spawned a new term — the Avro model — in the acquisition field due the unique path adopted. Actually, there is an acquisition fatigue that has crept in, a state that needs to be broken by actually inducting the aircraft that is sorely required by the IAF. The C-295 would also be the natural replacement for AN-32s which too would be getting phased out soon,” Bahadur said.

cost Canada $2.3 billion to get 16 of the things. Much better deal for India. Airbus and Europe must be getting desperate. :)

You can't say that. India has deployed a large number of fighters on the border. Then tell us the location with news (of course, we don't need Indian news, we have Beidou navigation). It makes Indians laugh. And, we're happy, too.
Dude, light tank is used in area where 45-65tons tank can't cross to or reached. Your Arjun can be powerful but it's useless if it can't go to places it need to fight.

As if those tank will goes unprotected by air defence.

This thing can hit target 17km away. How far can your hellfire from apache hit? I heard max is only 10km.

If that the case than that means its a typo. There's no way price difference could be that much.

indian transport logistics is massive
c17 11 and 2 more planned
il76 17 planes,
an32 80 planes,
soon 56 c295
over 200 mi17
100 dhruv helicopter
15 chinnooks

this is why India can move 50000 troops in weeks from north South or west quickly .

They have been "buying" these planes for the last 4 years. No contract signed just "cabinet approval". Imran Khan can "approve" us buying 36 J-20s, does not make it happen......

Another Panic buying by India!!

This time next year, Modi would be able to utter the name "China"!!

Perhaps. 8-)

It really is not, you need to put it in perspective.

You have a 1.2 million man Army and just 11 C-17s and 17 IL-76 Transport plane in Heavy catagory.
12 C-130s and 80 AN-32s in Medium catagory.

US Army is 500,000 men

USAF has 270 C-17/C5 in heavy role and 240 C-130s in medium role

UK Army is 100,00 men

RAF has 30 C-17/A400M in Heavy role and 32 A330/C-130 in medium role

Australia Army has 30,000 men

RAAF has 8 C-17s in heavy role and 22 C-130s/C-27s in medium role

India's transport capacity is big, but relative to it's armed forces it is tiny.

Canadian aircraft had very specific requirements and the cost included support till 2042.

Seems to me Indians were a hell of a lot smarter. Canadians could have had 3x the planes without the support deal and then just kept 2/3 in storage. Most likely traitors in Canada wanted to give a bunch of Canadian money to Spain so the Spanish could do nothing like they always have.

YE LOG APNI DUNYA MAIN REHTY HAIN

other hand china every week getting closer to usa

The number is big because Indian wants to get license production of this plane.

I dont understand with how many scientist, engineers, and smart people India has and all the $$$ they have spent over the last decade on their military (600+bn) why they dont even have a decent domestic arms industry?

Even 10% that $$$ could have been used to develop what is purchased abroad at a much much cheaper rate due to the low cost of labour.
