The government will set up the world's largest solar power project, having a total generation capacity of 4,000 MW, in Rajasthan.

The ultra mega green solar power project, whose idea has been mooted by the Heavy Industries Ministry, would be set up close to Sambhar Lake and about 75 kilometres from the state capital Jaipur.

"Total capacity of this project will be 4,000 MW and, therefore, this will be the largest solar based power project in the world," an official release said today.

The project would be spread across 23,000 acres area of Sambhar Salts Ltd, a subsidiary of central enterprise Hindustan Salts Ltd.

Minister of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises Praful Patel said the first phase of the project - having 1,000 MW capacity - is likely to be commissioned by the end of 2016.

Once fully implemented, the project would generate 6,000 million units of electricity annually.

The first phase would be implemented through a joint venture company, whose stakeholders would be Bharat Heavy Electricals, Solar Energy Corporation, Power Grid Corporation, SJVN, SSL and Rajasthan Electronics and Instruments Ltd (REIL).

"Based on the experience gained during implementation of the first phase of project, the remaining capacity would be implemented through a variety of models," the release said.

Being the first project of this scale anywhere in the world, this project is expected to set a trend for large scale solar power development, it added.

India, which is a power deficit country, is working on ways to increase contribution from renewables, especially solar, to its total energy mix. The ambitious Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission aims to have about 20,000 MW of grid-connected solar power by 2022.

We already has worlds largest photovoltaic plant, right?

Congrats for this huge solar energy project, but it seems that blowing hot air is India govt's favourite national project.

Phase 1 is only going to be commissioned by end of 2016, did the govt disclose how long it take to complete? That's only 1,000 MW. What about the remaining 3,000 MW? It could be 2030 by the time the entire project is completed, by then, many countries would have built even larger solar plants, LOL.

Rajasthan weather also must be suitable for solar plant apart from large chunk of land which is not cultivable

Wont take that long. The aim is to have about 20,000 MW of grid-connected solar power by 2022.

NEW DELHI: On a day US president Barrack Obama announced major steps to choke use of coal for producing electricity, the UPA government on Friday unveiled its biggest green dream of building the world's biggest solar power project with a capacity of 4,000 mw.

The project will be built on 23,000 acres of land belonging to Sambhar Salts Ltd, a subsidiary of central enterprise Hindustan Salts Ltd under the department of heavy industries, some 75 km from Jaipur. State-run power gear maker Bhel would build the project's first phase of 1,000 mw in consortium with Solar Energy Corporation, Power Grid Corporation, SJVN, SSL and Rajasthan Electronics and Instruments Ltd.

The first phase of the project is to be operational by 2016. Once all the phases are completed, the project would generate 6,000 million units of electricity annually. The project is expected to set a trend for mega-scale solar power development in the country in lines of ultra-mega power projects for coal-fired plants that was launched to quickly ramp up generation capacity in the country.

India has a different view on ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions than the West and is working on ways to increase the share of renewable, especially solar, in its total energy basket, but tariff remains an issue. The Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission aims to have about 20,000 mw of grid-connected solar power by 2022.

No. Spain has the worlds largest photovoltaic plant

Very good news .....

We need to make huge investments in renewable sources .

I second this, india and other countries need to diversify their sources of energy instead of putting their egg in one oil basket. Although infrastructure is questionable

Pakistan share same geography and climate in all of Punjab.... but our energy & resources are controlled by IMF, therefore no permission for independent investment in solar energy sector and no permission to use thar coal to produce energy.

All right! Congress government is Rajasthan leading india to bright solar future!!
