India On Its Way To Becoming A Superpower, Says CIBC Deputy Chief Economist Benjamin Tal

By Lachman Balani

BRAMPTON: Respected Canadian economist Benjamin Tal, who is the deputy chief economist at the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC), says India is on its way to becoming a superpower and a strong contender for developed markets.

“India is showing an upward trend in growth against a global downward trend…India is a shining star and will continue to be a positive story in the next 3 – 5 years with a growth possibility of up to 20 percent,’’ said Tal, speaking as the keynote speaker at a gathering of small business owners organized by the Indo-Canada Chamber of Commerce (ICCC) at Marriott Courtyard hotel in Brampton last week.

Praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his pro-business approach and fast tracking business and economic initiatives, Tal said Modi’s ‘Make in India’ strategy as well as planned 100 smart cities would contribute hugely towards India’s progress.

He also praised the Reserve Bank of India and its governor Raghuram Rajan for pro-reform policies.

Congratulating India on the success of its Mars mission, Tal said its achievements in its space programme were second to none.

Highlighting Indian demographics with its burgeoning youth population, high disposable incomes, he said their growing consumer demands would outrun developed countries. “India is on track for a very bright future and the future for India is now,’’ according to him.

The noted economist encouraged young entrepreneurs to strengthen ties with India.

Tal also praised Canadians for their ability to keep their debt-to-GDP ratio stable in an environment where it was extremely tempting to keep taking credit and loans since interest rates were at their lowest, saying: “We have to give credit to Canadians for not taking on credit.”

He also provided some useful insights into China and other global markets.

ICCC president DP Jain

ICCC president D.P. Jain, who introduced the keynote speaker, spoke about the growth in Indo-Canadian business relations during the last five years.

Jain, who runs his very own successful tax company and is a specialist in the area of taxation, encouraged members of the community and youth to set up their own business and nourish their entrepreneurial spirit as the environment had changed substantially and they would have a lot of support and guidance.

Tony Chawla, ICCC Vice President and master of ceremony for the evening, said, “Mr. Tal’s session this evening is part of the Chamber’s continuing efforts to provide a platform to take the Canada-India bilateral trade to a new level.”

District VP of CIBC Brampton Mr Rajeev Misra and other prominent members were also present.

Of all the nationalities, more Indians desire the title of "superpower" more than any other people
Logic fail
Of all the nationalities, India has 1.3 billion population. Even if 0.5% of that population wants to be a superpower, its more than the whole population of many of your states. BTW around 1 billion Indians don't even care as long as they are well off themselves.

"India will be a superpower" is a candy that westerners throw towards Indians as they just love to hear such thing, especially if it comes from their white masters.
