India to acquire ‘x-band’ radars
Can spot a six-inch object from 4,600 km

New Delhi, June 6
Seeking better protection against incoming enemy’s ballistic missiles and air-borne attacks launched by maverick terrorist organisations, India is to acquire the latest “x-band” radars that have an astonishing 4,600-km range to pick out missiles and airborne objects.

These will allow ground-based handlers to pick out even a six-inch-wide airborne object from that distance and give the option of retaliation. The long range spotting capacity will allow a reaction time that will be six times quicker than the present capacity of India. This will help ramp up the ballistic missile defence capabilities in this “missile-charged” neighbourhood with both China and Pakistan possessing missiles of varied ranges.

The new acquisition will bring cities like Beijing, large parts of South East Asia and also countries in the entire Middle East within India’s viewing range. Present Indian capability is the Swordfish radar that can spot objects from 600-800 km away, which is under an upgrade to have a 1,500-km range. This is essentially a derivative of the Israeli Green pine radar that is now produced locally by the DRDO.

The use of long-range radars is immense as they can “acquire” or view a target and are capable of tracking it down, enabling the ground based operator to fire a counter missile and shot down the incoming enemy missile. India has already demonstrated technology to fire a missile and destroy an incoming missile at an altitude of 15 km above the earth and another test to take on the missile at a height of 48 km. The new powerful state-of-the-art technology x-band radar will be the best bet to tackle ICBMs in China’s arsenal, sources said while adding that the Chinese missile code-named ‘Dongfeng 31’, was a proven platform that can fire for 8,000 km. The Pakistani Hatf and Ghauri missiles, essentially hand-me-down versions of Chinese and North Korean missiles, are India-specific.

Each of the new x-band radars is expected to cost close to $600-700 million. Sources said only a one US company has produced such a long-range radar. Israel had requested the US to provide one and got it. This was to provide a defence against any perceived misadventure by Iran. Now India could either tie-up with the US or Israel.

6 inch object from 4600km :rofl::rofl: :rofl:whats the name of this radar?:flame:

X band radars operate on a wavelength of 2.5-4 cm and a frequency of 8-12 GHz. Because of the smaller wavelength, the X band radar is more sensitive and can detect smaller particles. These radars are used for studies on cloud development because they can detect the tiny water particles and also used to detect light precipitation such as snow. . Also, due to the small size of the radar, it can therefore be portable like the Doppler on Wheels. (DOW) Most major airplanes are equipped with an X band radar to pick up turbulence and other weather phenomenon. This band is also shared with some police speed radars and some space radars.

I am wondering that if it is true (total assumption)!!!! how can you filter water droplets or birds or things like that :hitwall: You need to purchase a super super Computer for filtering operation and the learnig (i mean machine learning) will be a big problem :cheesy: :cheers:

The article clearly says a similar one has been given to Israel.. so its basically the same one.. waiting for military experts like gambit or thomas to shed some light on it.

From all the radars of US,Only the PAVEPAWS has the ability to scan 4600KM,but the one he sold to Taiwan can only scan 1500KM,and US can choose and control the distance of the radar's scan range ~~
Taiwan got 2 PAVEPAWS in 2004 for 1.8billion $,that is the first time US sold this radar~Even EU and Japan are unable to get this radar

dont you think that the norman radar also has the filteration system.
think of a case a normal radar of 250km range. detects a target of a plane size so it can detect a flying bird at 5km. but the systems with the radar filters the aquired signals (may be pattern of reflection as a derectory available in the system) and only project the most hostile targets on the screen.

The U.S. did not sell the X-band radar to Israel. the one there now is manned by U.S. troops. The U.S. simply shares the information from it. It can reach from Israel to about 80% of Iran. I am sure China would not be happy for India to obtain one.

However that being said I would be surprised if we sold one to India. becuase we would not even sell it to Israel. This might be a case of India putting feelers out to see if it's possible.

Gambit is the Radar expert ...........
