Yes, it seems to be dysfunctional to me, too, though I was expecting it to be a success.

So, you do not want BD to make BIMSTEC a success.you have freaking clue what you are talking yet pushing awami al-cowda agenda like chicken without head.
Nah...it can't. Not with this level of India Pakistan rivalry. Besides India is too big. SAARC will always be dominated by India unless China can somehow be included, which is next to impossible. I wish BD could somehow join ASEAN....which seems next to impossible too. A bad neighborhood we're in.SAARC can still work

It will probably go 100 years this way. Things are only getting worse.right now India-Pakistan rivalry is hot. it does not have to be that way 10 years from now.

That's pretty much it. BD has good role-models in the ASEAN. Increasing trade volumes with south east asian countries can help BD reduce it's dependence on India and China.SAARC has become almost non-functional. This is perhaps why the countries together are trying to build a plausible platform BIMSTEC with the participation of many countries in the region. I think, this platform suits BD because of its location in between a big India and a growing Thailand and Myanmar. I have very little knowledge about BIMSTEC. Hope, someone knowledgeable will shed light on it.

China is neither a South Asian country nor it needs to be in SAARC, it enjoys enough benefits through trade with all SAARC countries.Nah...it can't. Not with this level of India Pakistan rivalry. I agree. Indo-Pak rivalry is an existential threat to the neighborhood and will remain that way unless India and Pakistan undergo a holistic policy revamp, which with our collective maturity is almost impossible. It will probably go 100 years this way. Things are only getting worse.
China has. Know your actual opponent if you are to stay in the game.Pakistan does not have the staying power to make it a 100 year rivalry
I know. We're kinda alone on this world. We have no country of or group of countries/organizatioon to rely on. Sad but we have to get used to it. I wish we could lobby hard enough to join ASEAN.
Yeah....that's why I see a bleak future for regional cooperation for BD.China is neither a South Asian country nor it needs to be in SAARC, it enjoys enough benefits through trade with all SAARC countries.
Also, China is not in bay of Bengal. Nor Bengladesh is in South East Asia.
Even India can be in ASEAN as it is in close proximity with Indonesia. The Andaman and Nicobar islands.

I think, you are too simplifying things. India is not a part of Andaman & Nicobar. It is the opposite of that. The two island groups are Indian overseas territory.Even India can be in ASEAN as it is in close proximity with Indonesia. The Andaman and Nicobar islands.
Is Sri-Lanka looking to join ASEAN? I think Bangladesh is trying to do something with ASEAN....Not sure how much will it work.BIMSTEC is an attempt by India to sideline Pakistan in the region nothing much else, As someone mentioned it's a gathering of some countries with little in common with, It's bound to fail
The reason that some of it's members are vying for the inclusion of China is because their apprehension of Indian domination of the body, To balance things off, That itself is a reason why it will remain even more toothless than SAARC
