india's car manufacturing industry has surpassed South Korea's to become the world's fifth largest in terms of output so far this year.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — South Korea produced 2.55 million cars in total between January and July 2016, 20,000 vehicles below India's figure of 2.57 million for the same period, The Korea Herald newspaper reported, citing data from the Korea Automobile Manufacturers Association (KAMA).
South Korea fell to the sixth spot in global rankings, losing fifth place for the first time in over a decade.

With final annual output figures still a long way off, manufacturers fear a continued setback from fifth place as the country's auto industry suffers from labor unrest and increasing taxes, according to the publication. Earlier in September, figures suggested South Korea's domestic and export car sales hit a seven-year low of just over 250,000 in August. The figures followed strikes by workers at Hyundai and Kia throughout the summer. Unions demanded bigger wage increases, while a temporary tax cut on new car purchases was canceled in late July. The world's top four car producers are China, the United States, Japan and Germany. Germany's Volkswagen became the global leader in car sales in April this year.

Slowly-2 manufacturing in Indian economy is picking speed and it will certainly increase our jobs quality as well quantity. Welcome news.

So India is on track to produce about 4.4 million cars this year....about a 6-7% growth over last year in volumes.

By 2020, we should hopefully beat Germany in volumes and take 4th spot and then set eyes on Japan and top 3 in general.

@bluesky have a tissue.

Japan's total production in 2015 was as follows: (cars = 7,830,722), (trucks = 1,309,749), (buses =137,850), and (total production of motor vehicles = 9,278,321).

It is good to see India gradually becoming a car society. However, it will be many decades before India can catch Japan in terms of the latter's production level. And. in terms of quality and infusion of very highly sophisticated technology I do not believe India or any other country of the world will ever match Japan.

Here, the people and society are so different comparing to those of other countries. Indian people will never match the Japanese people's quality. With an inferior quality of population it is quite difficult to build a technology oriented society like Japan.

30'years ago I would have agreed with you. However Japan has been pretty much forced to offshore their vehicle production due to tariffs and whatnot. They now have manufacturing facilities worldwide. So even though the number of vehicles Japanese companies may be selling is going up the number actually built in Japan is probably going down.

Is the comparison fair...probably not.

Already arriving and being sold in Japan :

Yep basically. India is now a huge and growing production hub for Japanese auto companies.

South korea makes its own brand. Indian just tighten the screw for foreign brand.

Don't worry. We are building our own car brands just like how we did with CVs & Motorcycles.

Tightening bolts? Are you talking about assembly of Mitsubishi light trucks from SKD kits by your BMTF ?

And we design, develop, manufacture & export automotives for several firms. Unlike RMG coolies who can't even assemble motorcycles.

I will be amazed if you can do anything similar to what Tata did in the 1980s with their 407 LCV. As I said earlier, your most advanced machine tools factory can only assemble light trucks with no indigenization whatsoever.

But they make great T-shirts, that count's for something right??

Never knew Japan produces more car than German powerhouse. Interesting.

Anyway, I believe if we take into consideration German brands car production both at home and abroad. Then Germany might even top the list(the table will look very different). Since most of these cars brands are mostly German, and Japanese, looks like they do even better than U.S car brands globally. South Korea might even come third if we consider this as well.

And then they claim that textile industry is far more advanced than automotive industry.

This is child's play
