If Congress kills Iran deal, sanctions would lose India’s support: US

White House has cautioned a hostile Republican controlled Congress against killing the historic Iran nuclear deal saying loss of support from countries like India would lead to a collapse of the sanctions regime.

“The key to the success of this latest round of sanctions has been the aggressive enforcement of countries around the world, including countries that aren’t even a party to this particular agreement countries like India, Japan and South Korea,” the White House Press Secretary told reporters on Friday.

These countries “previously relied heavily on the importation of Iranian oil and by scaling back their oil purchases that had a negative impact on Iran’s economy but also had a negative impact on the domestic economy of those individual countries,” he pointed out.

“So the point is that the sanctions regime would collapse if Congress were to kill this deal,” Earnest said.

“And what that means is it means that the international leverage that we have previously used to reach this agreement would vanish.”

“The second is, Iran would still obtain the financial benefits of sanctions relief something that our critics have described as a financial windfall,” Earnest said.

“And the problem is, Iran is going to get all of that money and the United States doesn’t get anything for it.”

Asked to explain President Barack Obama’s claim that 99 percent of the world community supports the deal, Earnest said “it was backed by “the Germans, the British, the French, the Chinese, the Russians, the South Koreans, the Japanese, the Indians.”

“All of the countries that were involved in pressuring Iran to come to the negotiating table in the first place,” supported the agreement between the six world powers led by the US and Iran to limitTehran’s nuclear programme.

“The fact is, if the United States Congress were to successfully kill this agreement, it would have a terrible impact on the standing of the United States in the world,” Earnest said.

This is an agreement not just between the United States and Iran; this is an agreement between theUnited States, Russia, China, Germany, the UK, and France, and Iran,” he said.

It was also “enthusiastically supported by, as the President said, 99 percent of the international community.”

“And for the United States, because of a congressional action, to isolate our country on such an important issue would be devastating to our standing in the world,” Earnest said.

This is the third time, Obama administration has cited the case of countries like India to sell the deal to its Republican critics as also to bring around some members of Obama’s own Democratic Party who have expressed reservations about it.

Earlier this week, National Security Advisor Susan Rice told PBS that if the Congress failed to approve the deal “Countries like Japan and India that have paid an economic price to implement these sanctions would no longer feel the obligation to do so.”

A White House official also made a similar argument saying when the US “went around to Europe, to China, to India, to South Korea, to Japan, and got them and others to reduce their purchases of Iranian oil, the express purpose of that effort was to get this deal.”

“So if, having gotten this deal, we then kill it, it is hard to see why those countries would then go back along with additional sanctions,” the official said.

SO literally India voiced strongly for its strategic partner country Iran ? I wonder these backdoor talks are good for India and it friends but definitely not for the our enemies . Who knows what's going on !

Interesting, is United States listening to Israel, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and some other countries? How does Israel feel about it?

we have trade and our own energy needs so of course we wouldn't support sanctions for the US's sake, even the reduced imports for the past few months was on the US's request so that they could get a deal, and it was temporary.

anyway, US congress will try and block it but Obama will veto it, after which they will need a supermajority to override the presidential veto, chances for which are slim to none.

the only real threat for now is a crazy republican hawk president in 2017 who might cancel it and go to war, but thats a long shot and a long way off.

Its not hidden from the world that the Indian lobby in the US has been at serious work on both sides of the isle, to allow the Iran deal. India has her own interests with Iran worth many billions of dollars, so her lobbyists have been working on every politician in making them support the Iran deal.

The US at this point has so much Indian lobby influence that it would do pretty much anything that India wants the US to do. Which is super wrong IMO. Its one thing to work with India due to the Chinese factors, but its a whole different story to allow India to change our own priorities. At the end of the day, when shiit hits the fan, India won't fight China for us. I am willing to bet my money on it. So at that time, we'll be going holly shiit, we got back stabbed. Which has happened with many others, jut how the Indians work. They are after themselves only. We in the US sing the "strategic interest" song, in India, they are looking at us going, give us all we need so we can be a super power, and we can dictate what you need to do, and don't ask us to do anything.

Nothing special. Obama is at his fag end of term. He better leave some legacy before vacating capitol Hill.

Not sure about them, but the point is in Indian context, India has had to pay significantly in terms of oil import bills owing to denial of purchase of crude from Iran. Further to this, Iran had agreed to take payment in Indian Rupee and at several point trade swapping or barter deals as well. Now luckily these days crude is low and dollar rates more or less stable, but situation can change rapidly in case OPEC changes its mind.
in these circumstances, it would be difficult for India to continue supporting sanctions, talking purely in economic terms.
Secondly US congress will have to take into account that the deal has come with consensus and efforts from P5, it cannot be brushed aside.

You seriously over-estimate the influence of Indian lobby. No one dictates to US, If you don't know that then I am sorry you don't know anything about US's way of working. India has been after engine tech from US for years but US has bluntly said no even if it would result in a huge profit. GE stands to loose billions on this matter.

No country changes it's priorities based on other's influence. Not US, not India, not China and not Russia.

Every one looks after its own interests...There is nothing to get agitated about....Although i really do not feel about power of the Indian lobby which is most of the time over hyped, US will do what it suits to its interests...US is too powerful nation to listen to lobby from some countries like India to change its priorities....If also, US has acted in certain way where India and its interests are in alignment, then it has to be understood that US has acted because of its benifit rather than getting lobby from Indian group...

This would make sense if you replaced 'India' with 'Israel'. No country barring Israel has enough clout to influence US foreign policies.

He's just a butthurt al-bakistani. "India does this; India does that..."

Very true!
In true sense, if there is a pressure group in Capitol hill, it has to be Jewish Lobby.

This is what happens when you have legalised corruption in the form of "lobbying" in your political system, your politicians are wh*ring themselves out to anyone willing to write a check, whether this be India, Israel, the NRA etc etc.

The US is effectively being run for corporations, "big business", thanks to the existence of lobbying, as an American, I doubt this is news to yourself.

Exactly what I was thinking the entire time I was reading that post.
