India signs deal for Harpoon Block II missiles with US

India has signed an agreement with the US government to purchase 24 Harpoon Block II missiles for its Jaguar strike aircraft, in a bid to ramp up its maritime warfare capability.

Boeing country head, defence, space and security, Mr Vivek Lall told ET, “the deal was successfully concluded through the Foreign Military Sales route late last month, with Boeing as the prime contractor. The missiles are for the Indian Air Force’s maritime strike squadron.”

The deal, expected to be worth about $170 million, has been on the cards for over two years now, with the Bush administration having wheeled out a sales notification during defence minister A K Antony’s visit to Washington in 2008. The US had also sold the same missiles to Pakistan.

The Harpoon Block II is the latest version of the subsonic missile and is able to strike land-based targets and ships. It is an all-weather, over the horizon, anti-ship missile which can be launched from surface ships, submarines and aircraft.

However, Lall said no agreement had been reached yet with regard to supplying the missile for P-8I, India’s long-range maritime reconnaissance and anti-submarine warfare aircraft. The P-8I is scheduled for delivery in 2013.

“The final weapons package for the P-8I is yet to be decided, and will again be sold through the FMS route,” he said.

According to the latest report of the Comptroller and Auditor General, the attack capability of the Navy’s depleted fighter aircraft fleet has been significantly eroded, as they have not been kept in full combat readiness, with the bombs fitted having become obsolescent.

Mr Lall said the Phase II of the Apache and Chinook helicopter programmes for the IAF will be held in the US later in the year. Phase II will involve weapons integration field trials for both choppers.

I agree .... it seems quite short sighted to buy weapons to equip a non-U.S platform from the U.S ....FMS route no less.....Any sanctions and the navy's air wing is in trouble....France or British(the jaguar being of British origin) armaments would have been better......

.
^what is harrpon's range:what: is it better than brahmos

.
hope navy speeds up this process of better equiping itself
b/w cant actualy understand wat dis deal is all about
24 is a very small number

.
it's a american strategy to sale the weapon..first they supply warship to pakistan and then sale anti-ship missile to india.....

.
Guys for $170 million,it will be 240 harpoons and not 24(since the price of a single harpoon missile is $0.7 million)

Title : Harpoon Block II
Description : Harpoon Block II provides accurate long-range guidance for land and ship targets by incorporating the low-cost inertial measuring unit from the Boeing Joint Direct Attack Munition, or JDAM, program; and the software, mission computer, integrated Global Positioning System/Inertial Navigation System and the GPS antenna and receiver from the Standoff Land Attack Missile Expanded Response, or SLAM-ER.

Harpoon Block II is capable of executing both land-strike and anti-ship missions. To strike targets on land and ships in port, the missile uses GPS-aided inertial navigation to hit a designated target aimpoint. The 500-pound blast warhead delivers lethal firepower against a wide variety of land-based targets, including coastal defense sites, surface-to-air missile sites, exposed aircraft, port/industrial facilities and ships in port. For conventional anti-ship missions, such as open ocean or near-land, the GPS/INS improves midcourse guidance to the target area. The accurate navigation solution allows users to discriminate target ships from islands or other nearby land masses or ships. These Block II improvements maintain Harpoon's high hit probability even against ships very close to land.

The multi-mission Block II is deployable from all current Harpoon missile system platforms with either existing command and launch equipment or the new Advanced Harpoon Weapon Control System, or AHWCS.

^ surely it have better advantages than brahmos:)

what advantages . Dear?

.
What advantage does this have over Brahmos???? Anyone,. I dont see any Advantage.... Can Anyone enlighten me a Bit?

.
Only advantage is "MADE IN USA" tag.

On a serious note this is sleeker and can be carried on medium sized planes as well but Brahmos needs a LORRY like MKI to carry it..
But again the carnage Brahmos will bring to the bad guys will be many times to that done by a HARPOON..

Feel Free to Disagree

No wonder they were having "pre-emptive" anal burns about Pakistani harpoons!
