India set to launch South Asia's first Semi High Speed Rail

Whenever I'm traveling by the high speed French TGV at almost 300kmph, I can't help noticing that there are no animals within 500m of the tracks. They are all fenced off in private properties. And the tracks are at ground level, not elevated. There's been no accident since its inception.
(I hope I haven't spoken too soon as I'll soon be heading from Paris to Nice on the TGV!! )

Amen to that! :)

Apart from animals,we have to deal with squatters who build up jhuggis right beside the tracks. But yes its a step in the right direction. Necessity is the mother of invention.

An illiterate crowd is the curse of our nation. It will take time for a solution.

It's not the illiterate crowd that bothers me, it is the unthinking leader who does. There is a subsidy of around Rs.400 (approx) per LPG cylinder. The government seems unable to muster the courage to get rid of the entire subsidy. Logic would go like this: an LPG cylinder would last minimum a month, most likely much longer for most families (In any case subsidised cyclinders are capped at 9, equal to 1.5 months per cylinder) An increase of Rs 300-400 per month/2months is not about to disastrously pinch a middle class household (BPL families are likely to be using another subsidised fuel-kerosene) compared to a Rs.30-40/kg increase in price of onions. Better to bite the bullet early & in a large enough quantity to essentially have money for development. These high speed, semi high speed trains will require quite a bit of funding, won't be coming out of anyone's backside. Rather than move funding out of other infrastructural projects, better to ease out wasteful subsidies.

Btw, I found the Railway Minister's(& other ministers & party spokesmen) behaviour with the price increase silly. Should have owned the increase in prices & then pointed out that the previous government also wanted to do the same but lacked the guts & governance skills necessary. Can't blame the previous government endlessly, people don't buy it & makes you look stupid. Except for suburban users in Mumbai, there was hardly any protest, politicans were the only ones who wanted drama. The average public accepts such increases, not like people grudge it immensely.

A couple of years ago Kerala Govt suggested a North South Express Highway so as to relieve the congestion in the Kerala roads. Almost instantly 'activists' opposed it terming it as project for the rich to drive their cars very fast. Also some environmentalists said that this project will divide Kerala into two... With this type of mentality no infrastructure can develop.

If they able to create a semi-high speed corridor as of golden quadrilateral, I will be more happy.

The current Mumbai Rajdhai, which average speed is highest in India, took 16hrs to reach Mumbai, and if 160 Kmph possible, then it reduce the whole time to 9-10hrs, if go non-stop. That will create a whole new possibility.

And the result is the regular road accidents .You can see that in Kerala.

This engines are capable enough. If we shape the engines aerodynamically, we can easily cross 200 KMPH with the same engine. IIT Bombay had told this in one study.

Govt will drastically reduce the subsidies in coming years.

Our middle class is now more than 40crores in addition to
tthis rich class of 15 crore and lower and average middle class .All of them using subsidies like that of poor.
So govt dont have any choice

This is a wise move. India build short distance HSR but with high speed between two or several important and distance close cities. Usually these cities have more economic connections and population flow is huge. Less investment and quick return. But the speed should at least be 250 km/h.

For HSR, we need EMU not locomotives.

I have not talked obout what you say. I am talking of efficiency point of view.

You said our engine are capable enough, which is not, the High speed railway is not pull by a single locomotives, they need EMU, for 250-300 Kmph.

Hey Bhagawan!!!!!!!!!!!

If we shape our engine aerodynamically, same engine can strike 40 KM Higher speed and save 3.5 crore electricity as per one study of IIT Bombay.

our middle class is larger than we are expecting. .. For example two of my friends families well settled and rich ... Their parents were high school HM( both mother and father )... 1 Of my friend is asst manager in bank and his sister as well ... 2 friend in private firm... still they got white card... We should eliminate this fake cards... the list is big ..but am giving small example. .. Of course both families are active in social awareness (lol) programs ....
