India set to ban import of weapons that can be produced indigenously

Nope, its 2 generations ahead, jf 17 can easily take down f22, f35 and the starship enterprise

No one gives a Rats arse about what you Indians think about Thunders. Only thing that matters is that your Sukhois were busy dogging BVR launched by these thunder on 27th Feb. Couple that with facts that half of the ordinance that was launched in India was deployed on our thunders. Meanwhile you people are so embarrassed by Tejas that you dare not even deploy it on front lines.

In keeping with the Aatmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan, the Defence Ministry proposes to ban the import of weapons that can be made in the country. This suggestion has been made in the second draft of the Defence Procurement Policy (DPP) 2020, in line with the announcements made during the Aatmanirbhar Bharat presentations in March.

The DPP 2020 will now be called Defence Acquisition Procedure (DAP) 2020, according to the draft put out by the Ministry.

The Defence Ministry will notify a list of weapons/platforms banned for import, which will be updated from time to time based on the requirements of the various Services, the draft said. The preparation of this negative list is on.

Besides, a budget head has been created by the Defence Ministry for ‘Make in India’ projects and a provision is being made for domestic capital procurement.

An industry body representative welcomed the move, saying it will mark a fundamental shift in India’s approach that has evolved to include acquisition of technology instead of just procurement of equipment. This is also being seen as a booster for MSMEs.

According to the 48th report of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Defence, India’s major equipment imports include rockets, simulator and component repair facility for tanks from Russia; laser designation pods, radars, aircraft pods, radios, weapons for ‘Garud’ commandos and missiles from Israel; aircraft, helicopters, missiles, artillery guns and simulators from the US, and aircraft, ammunition, bimodular charge system and high zone modules of artillery guns from France.

Local capabilities

India currently exports indigenously developed patrol vessels, helicopters, sonars and radars, avionics, radar warning receivers, small arms, small calibre ammunition, grenades, telecom equipment, coastal surveillance gear, simulators, bullet-proof jackets and body armour.

These will be the low hanging fruits for completely shutting the doors to imports

Good step. Here I will suggest you guys, instead of making everything from scratch, give licensed production a second thought. You will not regret it.

For complex and sophisticated systems where we haven't made significant progress in development, ofcourse license production is the way to go

According to the article, India still need to import rocket.....

so its mean no more ammo purchasing ? indian forces have to use dirty ammo made in india

Lagta hai patakhay ban honay walay hain, uskay ilawa banatay hi kia hain ye

Just continue to purchase foreign weapons and rebrand them as indigenous and claim credit! This is India's way of getting the job done!

Is that why you imported a chinese jet and spray painted it green rather than trying to manufacture an indigenous jet?
So JF a JV is being compared with a fuking failed samosa designed by france, assembled in india and under development since 4 decades?

And that too moaning to a Chinese poster?

4+ decades and still 70% imported.. bhag bose dk.

The Air Force has decided to place an order for 100 new and improved Tejas Light Combat Aircraft. However, despite being in the works since 1983, the light fighter is nowhere near indigenisation and almost 70% of the aircraft’s systems still need to be imported.

Bc kawa chala hans ki chal.

People here will be shocked at the variety and volume of indian weapons that will enter the services in the next 10 years. They have an obsolete idea of indian defence industry which is in transition with OFB corporatized and private industry now in.I will enjoy watching the squirm.

Good start ... India needs to force indigenization upon itself. Even if domestically produced weapons are inferior to foreign ones initially, it is a good foundation which can be greatly expanded. The problem is will such legislation pass?

Never.

I would like to pur Rifles, artillery shells, mortars, Artillery guns, warships upto destroyers, single engine plane of light weight category to be put in no import list.

Tejas is 75% indigenous by numbers and 60% by value, not 70% imported. The link you were trying to post doesn't work, though economic times does open up. I have posted a working link from the same site.

If you have another link to show its 70% imported, post it.

Yes, joint venture , like Sukhoi mki 30.
