India sends film on farmers suicide to Oscars
India has selected "Peepli Live ", a satirical flick on how media and politicians see issues like farmer suicides in the country, as its official entry to next year 's Oscars in the U.S., local media reported.

The film, which earned the appreciation of Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, has been selected as the official entry to Oscars in the Best Foreign Film category, the reports said.

Produced by eminent Indian actor Aamir Khan and directed by Anusha Rizvi, the film revolves round a small village.

The village makes it to the headlines leading to a media fenzy when two poor farmers lose their only piece of land over on an unpaid debt to bank after a poor monsoon and one of them decides to commit suicide to get government compensation to save land.

It clearly shows how media and politicians tackle the issue. The film was shot in a small village in the central state of Madhya Pradesh.

Yeah, I heard about this on tv (I think it was Dubai TV or some international channel)... Good idea, using film for sending good messages and correcting stereotypes (khuda kay liye, apparently it's good)

Perhaps it might not have been the best approach then. Hopefully, nobody is gonna look and a poor farmer at think about him like the movie portrays them!

Of course farmer suicide is an important issue, but that's not the main point of the movie, it portrays the media and how it trivializes things like the 'prince stuck in a well' issue (indians would know that).

But good work by xinhua
