India says no to compensation for blocking Chenab in Aug ‘08

Wednesday, June 24, 2009
ISLAMABAD: New Dehli has refused to extend compensation both in shape of water or in monetary form to Islamabad for the blockade of Chenab river by India in August, 2008 that inflicted huge monetary loss to agrarian economy of Pakistan.

“During the three-day dialogue between Pakistan and India at Permanent Commission of Indus Waters (PCIW), held in New Dehli from May 31 to June 2, Islamabad raised the issue of compensation of massive dip in water availability that Pakistan experienced in August 2008 owing to filling of Baglihar hydropower project, but India has turned down any compensation saying that it does not believe the data of Pakistan and argued that water dip that the lower riparian country experienced was not because of the filling of Baglihar project, rather it was because of the hydrological conditions of Chenab river,” reveals the document containing the minutes of the Delhi meeting exclusively available with The News.

However, India, the document says, desires to verify the data collected by Pakistan authorities when the River Chenab experienced dip in the month of August 2008.
Syed Jamaat Ali Shah headed Pakistan delegation during the meeting at Permanent Commission of Indus Waters level.

Under the Indus Waters Treaty, India cannot reduce the flow in Chenab River below 55,000 cusecs between 21st June and August 31, 2008, whereas Pakistan had been receiving a discharge of as low as 20,000 cusecs during August-September 2008.

When contacted spokesman of Ministry of Water and Power, Zarar Aslam confirmed that India has refused to compensate Pakistan for the water shortage that the country faced in August 2008 in River Chenab. However, he refused to share the modus operandi that the government will adopt to tackle this issue.

Pakistan Commission of Indus Water Commissioner Syed Jamaat Ali Shah was not available for comments despite many attempts to contact him.

India is currently spending around $200 billion on the construction of water tunnels to the River Indus, which could turn parts of Pakistan barren, a senior official at the Ministry told The News.

According to, Advisor to the Punjab Irrigation Department advisor M H Siddiqui says that Chenab blockade in August 2008 affected over 10 million acres of land in the province and the standing paddy crop in the area suffered losses, as it was the time of maturity and needed the last watering, which could not be completed just because of the blatant violations of Indus Waters Treaty 1960 by India and continuing to fill up the dead shortage of Baglihar HPP beyond August 31, 2008.

The document also reveals that Jammat Ali Shah has sought permission from New Delhi to visit three large hydropower projects that India is constructing at Laddakh Area on River Indus, which is the lifeline of Pakistan. —KM

GOD is somehow always helping us. INDIANs were calculating the impact of this last year action on our wheat crop this year. And they were right considering the power outages, water in canals was not there, tubewells were not running. Even I was amazed on seeing the results on our FAMILY LANDS. Extended winters coupled with the right amount of rain at the right time has given us a yield geater then the last 2 years.
There 'obsession' on seeing PAKISTAN on the knees is just the making of there own downfall. Decisive & extended war is inevitable. Irony is that there 'LOGICAL & MATHMETICAL' calculators cannot see the HISTORY repeating itself. i-e social, political & economical turmoil in in the region which started from CENTRAL ASIA & AFGHANISTAN and has spread to KASHMIR & PUNJAB. Result is a 'HORDE' in the making and seeing all the GOLD accesible in INDIA.
The HINDU from HISTORIC TIMES is always the victim of his own GREED & caught in this cycle of events repeating itself. Always accumulating wealth & in the end loosing it all to HORDES. Only differnce is this time, the wealth has gone too much in there HEADS and they are just speeding up the process by meddling in the region affairs.

Right, nature always do justice ,India's power hunger is itself enough to disintegrate it into small states ,for example due higher rate of development they are now facing negative inflation effect on more then 50 million NRI's working abroad .

Second aspect is that our leaders are against the Dams now if India will stop the water of Indus What they will do?????

Can PPP leadership give answer to this question ?????

The large Dams are multipurpose for irrigation and power generation.

Presently in big cities load shedding is minimum 12 hours and it will continue untill we built two big Dams, Kala Bag Dam and Bhasa Dam.

.

How did you come to the conclusion that negative inflation is affecting NRI\'s and power hunger can disintegrate a state?

.
This decision was to be expected, afterall, India is a peace loving nation.

This should be sent to all those people think we should have a very small army and small defense. If Pakistan was extremely weak like BD or SRI Lanka India would have blocked all water permanently.Anyhow nothing to be worried about.GOP and Army/ISI is their to protect our water and they will surely figure something out.

Indian rupee is gaining strength rapidly as compare to dollar from last one year , as result NRI saleries are decreasing similarly it will also effect all other industrial and financial sectors .

The above shows that the rupee is depreciating and not appreciating unless you are in a habit of watching your computer standing on your head.

India most affected by US economic slowdown
By Swati Prasad, ZDNet Asia
Tuesday, April 08, 2008 07:53 PM
news analysis When the United States sneezes, the world catches a cold--so the adage goes. That could prove particularly true for India's IT and IT-enabled services (IT-ITES) industry, where the United States accounts for the largest share--at over 50 percent--of the Indian software and outsourcing market.

"The U.S. slowdown will impact the smaller IT-ITES firms more," Hari Rajagopalachari, executive director at PricewaterhouseCoopers India, told ZDNet Asia in an e-mail interview. In fact, he added, it may lead to increased consolidation in the small and midsize industry segment.

According to Milan Sheth, Ernst & Young India's partner of business advisory services and leader of technology and telecom verticals, the economic slowdown will most affect midsize IT-ITES companies.

"Most small firms have very strong niches. It's the midsize firms that will be badly hit in the event of a portfolio rationalization by the American clients," Sheth told ZDNetAsia in a phone interview.

The economic slowdown in the United States has already had some impact on the Indian market. The rupee has been strengthening against the dollar for over a year now, causing worries for Indian exporters.

The Indian stock markets also crashed due to the downturn, with the BSE Sensex dipping by nearly 13 per cent in just two trading sessions in January this year. It bounced back after the U.S. Federal Reserve cut interest rates. The BSE Sensex, or Bombay Stock Exchange Sensitive Index, comprises 30 of BSE's largest and most actively traded stocks.

"The U.S. slowdown is a long and protracted one," Rajagopalachari said. He explained that the U.S. slowdown is due to structural readjustments in the country, while the global economic scenario is caused by changing fundamentals in the currency, energy and financial markets.

"The implications for all of India's externally linked sectors are significant," he said. "The strongest and most immediate impact will be on the IT-ITES sector."

You really do stand on your head don\'t you. The chart shows USD per INR. Look closely and you will see value of INR going down vis-a-vis the USD. If you cant understand a simple chart, it is beyond me to educate you.

Are you suggesting that India has blocked all water to BD ?
