India, Russia Discuss Submarine-Building – Source

MOSCOW, August 22 (RIA Novosti) – An Indian military delegation has arrived in St. Petersburg to discuss military-technical collaboration in submarine-building, a Russian defense industry source told RIA on Thursday, days after a Russian-made sub in India’s navy exploded.

“It is a routine meeting of a joint [Russian-Indian] working group that had been scheduled long before the explosion on the INS Sindhurakshak,” the source said on condition of anonymity. "The Indian delegation is headed by the Indian navy’s chief of materiel, Vice Admiral Nadella Niranjan Kumar."

The Sindhurakshak, one of 10 Russian-built Kilo-class submarines in service with the Indian navy, blew up and sank at its moorings in the port of Mumbai last week, killing 18 crewmembers.

The boat had been recently refitted in Russia and returned to service in January. Russia has offered to send a team of experts to assist India in the investigation of the accident.

According to the source, the agenda of the talks included the possibility of a second round of upgrading for India’s Kilo-class (Project 877 EKM) diesel-electric submarines, as well as Russian participation in the Indian tender for six new diesel-electric subs and other issues aimed at boosting the development of India’s submarine fleet.

The discussion of the recent accident with Sindhurakshak may also be on the agenda, the source added.

Meanwhile, several Indian media outlets have speculated that the Indian navy may lease additional Kilo-class subs from Russia to maintain combat readiness of its submarine fleet.

It would be better for us to do a jv on diesel submarine with russia but if they reject jv then we are better off with german type 214 or newer concept like type 216

I think its not good for india as they have rejected lada class(basis for amur).....or are atleast not pleased with performance
And where is the russian aip!!

also,there is some problem regarding U214 in SK navy I guess..and its better if we stick to the same time of sub this time..so,most likely upgraded Scorpene is going to be the winner..I like Scorpene,but its price hike and delay is what makes me concerned..

Russians said they will have AIP for the test model. So its upto them to produce it. Not our problem.

Exactly what i said in another thread...........but rate of production is pathetic

Solution-

1)Put some observers there from other shipyards while the scorpene is being produced,,,,,,or at least hire 30-40 % force from other govt controlled shipyard and let them contribute to this first 6 submarines completion.

2)when they gain experience after 6 are produced work can start on follow on submarines consecutively by 2-3 shipyards increasing speed many folds

I am still supporting T-214 and lada. both are very powerful subs.

Russians said they will have AIP for the test model. So its upto them to produce it. Not our problem.

Numbers maybe increased upto 9.
However beyond that is doubtful as scorpene lacks vertical launch tubes and can't be integrated with brahmos.

In P-75 adding Brahmos tubes means cost escalations. And yes it can be done but will be costly.
Anyways P-75 will most likely to go for a follow on 3 sub order. That was already in talks.

We need to somehow increase scorpenes to at least 9 and am not sold on amur................russia is itself sceptical about lada and have delayed its induction.

Amur 950 is hust......small

Amur 1650 has no vlt
