NEW DELHI: Thanks to closing the gender gap in wages and educational attainment, India rose 21 places in gender equality rankings, but it still stood at an abysmal 87 out of 144 countries evaluated by the World Economic Forum. And Pakistan ranked second from the bottom, again.

India has in fact fully closed its primary and secondary education enrolment gender gaps, according to the Global Gender Gap Report 2016 released yesterday.

Of other countries in South Asia, Bangladesh outranked India at 72, Sri Lanka ranked 100, Nepal 110, the Maldives 115 and Bhutan 121. The only country ranked below Pakistan, at last position, is Yemen, at 144.

Globally, the leading four nations continue to be Scandinavian, with Iceland on top, followed by Finland, Norway and Sweden. The US was ranked 45.

Of Brics countries, South Africa ranked 15, Russia was at 75, Brazil ranked 79 and China came in at 99. China slipped from last year's position of 91, which in turn was lower than its 2014 ranking of 87.

The Global Gender Gap Report 2016 report measures gender parity in 'Economic Participation and Opportunity', 'Educational Attainment', 'Health and Survival' and 'Political Participation'.

In economic participation, India rose slightly in the rankings, to 136 from last year's 139. In education, it ranked 113, up from 125 last year, in health it was an abysmal 142, up just one position from last year, and in political participation, it was a high 9, the same as last year.

In 2015, projections based on the Global Gender Gap Report data suggested that the economic gap could be closed within 118 years, or by 2133. The latest report noted that the prospects for workplace gender equality have slipped beyond our lifetimes, to 2186.

China is at 99. Clean ur mess before talking trash abt others
I can't agree to your logic.
Although the GDP per capita of India is far less than China(abt one-fifth), it is often the case that Indians here talking abt China's economy without any insight.
According to your logic, they should shut up, right?

I was under the impression that China had decent gender equality at least compared to South Asia. What's your view? Anyway ignore the trolls.

China is not the leader in the field of gender equality, similar to other East Asian countries.(such as, Japan, Korea)

It is meaningless to have a debate on which country is worse, after all, the gap is not large.

In general, South&East Asian countries are low-ranking in Gender equality, which deserve the word "abysmal".And I didnt have any ill will, TOI gave the title and I didnt change it.

In terms of political empowerment of women, China ranked very low and lost to India. :/

Owing to recent unreasonable policy, women are becoming less and less competitive in job market, which causes decline in proportion of women in the workplace.

Some years ago, China ranked 60+ in gender equality with highest proportion of women in the workplace..But now that's another story.
