India purchased $30 billion worth defence equipment in last four years

India has made defence purchases worth a whopping INR 144,9118.0 Million (US$30 billion approx) during a four year period starting fiscal 2007-08 and ending fiscal 2010-11.

According to Defence Minister A. K. Antony, total purchases which stood at INR 281,591.6 Million in 2007-08 rose to INR 468,875.6 Million in 2010-11, a rise of nearly 80% in four years.

Antony stated in a reply given in the Indian Parliament that procurement from indigenous companies exceeded that of direct procurement from international companies. Adding up the year-wise figures provided by the minister, indigenous procurement stood at INR 957,058.5 Million while procurement from foreign sources amounted to INR 422,059.5 Million during the four year period.

The year 2010-11 also marked a reversal in the trend of allocations Vs spending. While in earlier years, defence procurement spending was below allocated amount, in that year, the Indian MoD overspent to the extent of INR 4865 Million above the budgetary allocation.

. .
Well we have estimated to buy around 1oo billion in total so we are not even half way so far. We are slow I guess.

. . .
That's only 7.5B a year, that's NOTHING for a military the size of India's.

30 BILLION Dollars seems to be a very large sum of money, when u see it independently.

But when u compare that with the $1.632 trillion figure of Indian economy as of 2010 (ie 1632 Billion dollars!), then it starts to look smaller...

And then when we start putting factors like population of 1.2 Billion (which means 24 dollars per Indian in 4 years OR 6 Dollars, ie 300 Rupees or so per Indian per year), then it starts looking like insufficient...

and then when we add the danger lurking on Northern and NE frontiers because of our DEAR neighbours, then an expenditure of 7.5 Billion Dollars (+ whatever) every year for all the three Armed forces and including even money spent on salaries and housing .. and I feel, Guys! we r seriously running short of our goals.....

and then, when we compare it UNFAIRLY with China's defense budget for 2009 which was $70.2 billion, i start feeling that our Government is SLEEPING!!!

That means we are very slow. As per MoD, we have to Buy defence equipment worth 150 Bn $ from 2007-2021 (15 years), so we are just completed 1/5th. We need to to purchase more without any delay.

India should invest more money in view of maintaining its World No 1 weapons importer ranking. Good news for the billions of poor who are still living in abject poverty and in wastes with no toilet, basic hygiene and basic education. Money from backshish, corruption and money laundering should also be accounted. indian politicians would also rank among the richest people in the world. Shame for a country which is still relying on crumbling infrastructure, contaminated water and 8hrs per day power supply for its development. $30 Billion are really not enough, India should invest all its financial resources for this noble cause that is weapons procurement for the Indian future generation and for maintaining US, EU and Israeli employmnet and for their support against China.

quit trolling dude, u don't need to remind us of our priorities......our expenditure on defence is half of that of pakistan in terms of percentage of GDP.....indians are welcoming this move, the only people having a problem with it are probably those who are afraid of india's increasing military might......

so procurement from indigenous source is almost double the procurement from foreign source.Good.
