The Indian Air Force will in the next few weeks finish weaving a security web with the Israeli SPYDER air defence missile system on the western borders in a bid to strengthen its preparedness to strike down any aerial threat from Pakistan.

The induction process was delayed by over three years due to the non availability of Czech-made Tatra trucks on which the missiles were to be carried.

The SPYDER (Surface-to-air PYthon and DERby) is a low-level, quick reaction missile (LLQRM) to neutralise hostile targets up to 15 km away and at heights between 20 and 9,000 metres.

SPYDER missile system is in the process of deployment along the western borders where it will help in tackling violation of Indian airspace

Senior defence sources told Mail Today: 'The SPYDER missile system is already in the process of deployment along the western borders where it will help in tackling any aircraft, cruise missile, surveillance plane or drone that tries to violate our airspace.'

The Python-5 is currently the most capable air-to-air missile (AAM) in Israel's inventory, while the Derby is an active radar homing AAM that provides the SPYDER missile system with a fire-and- forget option.

'The IAF will use the SPYDER along with the made-in-India Akash surface-to-air missile which has a little longer effective range of 25 km as part of a layered approach to defend vital assets and locations in the country,' the sources stated.

A delay in sourcing the Czezh-made Tatra truck caused the hold up in implementation

The SPYDER deal was completed by the IAF with Rafael and Israeli Aircraft Industries (IAI) in 2008 and supplies were to begin in three to four years.

But the process got delayed due to the unavailability of the Tatra trucks, which got mired in a controversy over bribery allegations.

To Israelis you do realise that arming India will not go down well with Pakistan and while we largely remain not involved in Israel Iran and Palestine conflict other than a few diplomatic hue cries in the UN from time to time, you are actually delivering weapons to our enemy which will make it a fair game if we start supporting Hamas and other groups in Palestine and Syria? You dont have shortage of enemies either, better not make new ones.

IA's top brass are way too desperate for kickbacks that they had to procure trucks from Czech's Tatra. If they issued a local tender, I'm sure Tata/Mahindra/Ashok Leyland would've come up with a better and cheaper solution

I see some intense butthurt in there.

What an irony when it is China who is currently arming PA, PAF & PN with huge loans and credit lines. Y'all better worry about arming your own military before you back someone's arse

Dont need an Indian to tell us what we can or cannot do. Soviets thought the same, the US thought the same, guess what all have to come realised. Israelis will too if they dont stop arming Indians which in turn alters the balance of power in the region.

You dont understand really? Are you that naive? Why does Israel cry over US selling hardware to Arab states than? They are also doing business no?

Butt hurt! Was India butt hurt when it was crying to Papa US to stop the sale of the F-16s to Pakistan? Suddenly the standards change? Why would Pakistan not object when we are not in any manner supporting factions that target Israel?
