Power cuts get worse Ludhiana
Kuldip Bhatia

Ludhiana, June 12
Immediately after the civic elections in the city concluded on Sunday, the power situation, which was already precarious ever since two 100 MVA transformers were damaged in a massive fire at the 220 KV Lalton substation, took a turn for the worse.

On Monday, power supply remained intermittent in most parts of the city, with load shedding at regular intervals all through the day, and even during the night. The power scenario became grimmer today with load shedding at most domestic feeders continuing while a six-hour shutdown at 220 KV Humbran substation further added to the woes of residents who were left without power in over a dozen localities.

Even though senior officials of Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) claimed that a new 100 MVA transformer installed at the Lalton Kalan substation had become operational, and some load had already been shifted to it, there was no visible improvement in the power supply as far as domestic feeders were concerned.

Sources in the power utility attributed the frequent load shedding and line failure in residential areas to lack of adequate infrastructure and overloading on most of the transformers in the urban areas.

"With the shifting of load due to snags at the Lalton substation and Ferozepur Road substation, the distribution and transmission equipment had taken a beating, which has now necessitated major maintenance shutdowns at Humbran Road, Model Town, Dugri and Ferozepur Road substations on June 12 and 13," sources said.

Residents complained that the PSPCL kept them in the dark about scheduled shutdowns and in case of line failure or other snags, the staff at the centralised customer care centre turns unresponsive.

"The complaints booked at customer care centres about power failure due to blown fuses or other defects remain unattended for hours. Complaints booked during night remain unattended till late in the morning," said Kartar Singh, a resident of Kundanpuri locality.
The Tribune, Chandigarh, India - Ludhiana Stories
That the poor quality of power supply in the city and frequent failures are the result of inadequate infrastructure and outdated equipment is borne out from the assertion of PSPCL officials at Patiala (headquarters of the power utility) who claim that as of now, there is no scheduled cut in power whereas the fact remains that people have to go without power for hours.

as i said that not cause we have shortage of power. but thats cause we have poor lines and now a days people use huge ACs which means too much load on lines. our infrastructure aint that good. but you know what farmers have free electricity in punjab. they misuse it bigtime

.
We only get 1 hour loadshedding everyday in Karachi... Most Better than your Indian states....

Well Karachi is your economic hub. If that doesn't get power in Pakistan, then who will.

No issue of water shortage in Gurgaon, problem is of power shortage
Rajat Bhatia
14 June, 2012
The cries over water shortage in Gurgaon are finally nothing but a fuss as according to the district town planning department of Gurgaon, there is no shortage of water but the public is not having adequate water because of power shortage, which means the water shortage issues, if any, seem to be connected to power shortage.

WATER AND electricity are the two most essential things for people. Both are interdependent, and when one is not there the other gets affected. Power generated is distributed in towns, cities and villages for households as well as industrial consumption but in the recent past, the summer power supply is in a very bad condition with long power cuts in the city and frequent technical faults - dampening all the auro around the Millennium City. Inefficiency of authorities to deal with power shortage is not only making things worse for people, it is also leading to a major shortage of water in the city.

Everyone is thinking that water supply and amount of water is not adequate to meet the total demand of the city but the truth is that there is enough water to meet the total demand but sources said that only because of power shortage water crises become more serious. "Kami kahan hai paani ki, bus bijli nahi aati isiliye paani nahi pahunch pata (Where is water shortage? Only because of power shortage people are not getting water.)," said Santraj Chauhan, from the district town planning department Gurgaon.

According to him because of power cuts and unavailability of electricity running of pumps and tube-wells becomes difficult and these tube-wells and pumps in water plants are the one in Basai that need to run continuously to provide continuous supply of water. It has been reported that when water is being pushed through these pumps in single line water pipes, and if at that moment there is a power cut, then the water flows back to the station, and it takes 2 to 3 hours to push it back.

There is also news that the District Town planning department is also having a plan to make a double water line - a backup water line by laying down a double water pipe to supply water in the city. "This will make it easy to supply water more quickly and in large quantity even if there is power cut, then water will not flow back, and this will save time and energy," said Chauhan.

Power cuts become more frequent after the arrival of summers, and lead to more problems to the people of Gurgaon, and here departments are not ready to take responsibility as Town planning officials also put their hands up, and say that it is the problem of the electricity board. "Please go and ask the concerned department we are not responsible for water shortage, we can not give you any statement and information as from our side there is no problem," said another officer of Town Planning Department. sitting near Chauhan.

BJP protests erratic power, water supply in city
5/31/2011 10:44:57 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, May 31:

3152011224457447.jpg

Continuing with its campaign against shortage of power supply and drinking water and price-rise, BJP activists held massive protest demonstrations in Ward numbers 22 and 10 of Satwari and Jammu East Mandals.
In W No. 22, it was led by BJP State Vice-president Suresh Jamwal while in W.No. 10 it was led by State Secretary Yudhvir Sethi.
Suresh Jamwal, while addressing the party activists at Shastri Nagar said that the party has launched state wide campaign against poor supply of drinking water and electricity besides price-rise as the Congress led UPA and the NC-Congress coalition in the state have miserably failed to ensure regular and adequate supply of essential commodities besides checking the sky rocketing prices. She said that a common citizen is finding it very difficult to survive but the government is least concerned. She said that in these days when the temperature has already crossed 40 degrees, the long power cuts and inadequate supply of drinking water has resulted into resentment among the people as a result of which they are forced to come on roads. High claims of working towards development and mitigation of the sufferings of the people by ministers of state’s NC-Congress coalition has turned out to be hollow as even basic commodities are beyond the reach of a common man in the state. She asked the state Chief Minister to intervene and direct the concerned departments to supply adequate drinking water and regular electricity.
State Secretary Yudhvir Sethi, while addressing the protestors at Purani Mandi said that higher officials of PHE and PDD are sleeping like Kumbhkaran and the people are suffering. On one hand unscheduled power cuts are imposed on the other there is no supply of electricity. Not only this, the price rise is also adding to the problems of the people. After every 2-3 months, the Congress-led UPA makes rise in the prices of petroleum products, which affects the prices of other items. He said that the water pipes in many wards of the city are leaking and need immediate replacement as the little water that reaches the houses of people is polluted and unsafe for drinking. He said that the party activists will further intensify the campaign if the departments do not take immediate and effective steps to ensure regular supply of drinking water and electricity.

New Delhi: It's summers in most parts of India and demand for power is at a peak of 2,17,000 megawatt (MW). But the power generation is much less at 1,99,877 MW and poor transmission and distribution is making it worse. Many cities like Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai are facing long power cuts and 40 per cent of the country does not get electricity at all. About 6 lakh villages do not have any network to receive electricity.
