Indian Navy missile frigate and corvette call at Port Klang after war games in the Pacific Ocean with Japan and the US.

PORT KLANG: An Indian navy commander has pledged to come to the aid of other countries in case of maritime security and disaster relief in the South China Sea.

Rear Admiral S V Bhokare, commander of India’s Eastern Fleet, said: “We want peace. We want to help other countries if they are in trouble. But if any countries want our help in maritime security and humanitarian relief, we will come forward.”

Adm Bhokare’s remarks were made while on a four-day port call here with a squadron of a guided-missile stealth frigate, Sahyadri and the guided missile corvette Kirch, as well as fleet tanker and support ship Shakti.

The three ships, and the frigate Satpura, are on their way home after taking part in the annual Malabar war games with the US and Japanese navies in the Pacific Ocean.

Asked about the rising tensions in the South China Sea arising from China’s maritime claims over the region, he said: “India is ready. When our ships sail out, it means we are ready to attack anyone who attacks us,” he replied.

There has been rising concerns in South East Asia over China’s claims over the Spratly and Paracel islands and the extension of its maritime borders, and the building of airports on reclaimed land near Borneo and the Philippines. China has also declared an air defence zone over parts of the South China Sea.

Tensions have arisen as the US Navy has challenged the Chinese actions on the grounds of freedom of navigation.

Adm Bhokare said India carried out military cooperation and exercises with many countries around the world.

He said the squadron had also visited South Korea, Philippines and Russia on their current voyage.

“Now we are fostering ties with Malaysia. These simulation exercises are a milestone in both countries in the maritime sector. In future, we hope to have real exercises with Malaysia.”

On Monday, Indian Navy planners and their Malaysian navy counterparts will be taking part in their first “table-top” war game at the naval base in Lumut, Perak to prepare for improved maritime security and disaster response in South East Asia.

During the table-top exercise, navy planners of both countries will share charts and graphs, discuss operations and carry out a war-game simulation.

He added that India and Malaysia have had defence cooperation since 1987 but the ties only progressed considerably in the last two years.

Last week, an international arbitration tribunal in The Hague rejected China’s claims to economic rights across the South China Sea.
