India plans to fence border with Bangladesh within two years

India is working to fence the entire border with Bangladesh within the next two years, a top official involved in the project has said.
“We have agreed on an action plan and are hoping that by December 2017 physical barriers will be erected wherever possible,” said Susheel Kumar, Secretary Border Management, under the Union Ministry of Home Affairs.

“Like Tripura, I have had discussions with Meghalaya and West Bengal. We are trying to complete the border fence everywhere.

"In Assam, we have decided to seal the border, including the river stretches, within two years,” Kumar said.

He disclosed the plan at the end of a review meeting with Tripura Chief Secretary Y P Singh, other senior officials, and various construction agencies engaged in fencing work.

He said there were difficulties of topography and people's perceptions at the local level. "We have discussed with the collectors and said they should open a dialogue with people to ensure the fence is erected.”

He said to complete the job on time, and in view of local issues, India would discuss with Bangladesh the erection of the fence at zero point in some place, if needed.

He also said fences would be erected in some places along the India-Myanmar border as well.

Fencing is necessary beacuse in few years BD will be under sea and we dont want people to come to this side. You can live on your hifi boats.

I wouldn't give my opinion on whether the fencing is good or not. but I've read about there are over 51 Bangladeshi Enclaves in India and about 111 Indian Enclaves in Bangladesh. wouldn't this fencing cause a cut off between India and her enclaves which would be a strategic problem for India as it has almost twice as much enclaves that Bangladesh has?

EDIT: Enclave is a piece of land owned and claimed by one country completely surrounded by another countries territory

Until you teach us how to move our nation to the Indian ocean, the fence will have to suffice and every pole vaulter will be shot..

I belive you were not paying attention to recent geopolitical developements in the region, so let me tell you a little secret. There are no more enclaves in either India or BD. That discrepancy in the Indo-BD border has been resolved. India gave all its enclaves to Bangladesh and BD gave all their enclaves in return. Although India lost a good chunk of territory in this deal, but still it was worth it, because now the border is much more streamlined and fencing is a viable option.

They simply ratified the agreement. The 1974 agreement had never been signed due to internal opposition from Indian state assemblies.
