Islamabad: The foreign secretaries of Pakistan and India will meet “shortly” to evolve a roadmap for bilateral dialogue, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s adviser on national security and foreign affairs said on Wednesday.

Sartaj Aziz told the Senate, the upper house of the parliament it was “manifestly clear” that South Asia cannot have durable peace and stability unless Pakistan and India make peace.

This requires building a qualitatively new environment in which mutual concerns are addressed in a credible way and efforts made to promote an agenda of peace and development, he said without indicating a date for the foreign secretary-level talks.

Aziz said Prime Minister Sharif has stressed that the main dynamic in South Asia should be cooperation, not confrontation. He said that Narendra Modi is the choice of the Indian electorate, and “we have already started our interaction with the new government” in India.

Aziz said Sharif’s early outreach to Modi to congratulate him on the Bharatiya Janata Party’s electoral victory and his participation in Modi’s swearing-in ceremony in New Delhi “are reflective of his sincere commitment to turning a new page in the relationship.”

Sharif’s initiative has been widely commended at the international level, Aziz said. “The government will continue to seek sustained and result-oriented dialogue, meaningful progress towards resolution of outstanding issues including Kashmir, and enhanced cooperation on economic issues,” he said.
