I got no reason to burn, US offered a regret for the incident within a week, whereas iirc Pakistan got the same regret for killing of 24 soldiers after 8 months begging for it.

I am pretty sure the incident will be resolved, and India wont have to bend its back to US as you guys .

Jeremy Carl; let us subject an American diplomat thru those indignities which you think trivial and watch how US reacts. Until then Mr. carls views are academic. What he is telling us is that it is alright for US to do anything.

Come to think of there are a number of issues in this case alone including hiding the complainant in US (usually reserved for Spies) and spiriting the maid's family out of India on urgently granted Visa when US were made aware months back that maid's husband and probably the maid herself are blackmailers of the worst kind.

Preet Bharara, the Manhattan prosecutor should be investigated for being a party to fraudulent evacuation of a known felon who works as pretty household help in the American Embassy circuit in New Delhi. (Normally it takes eight years to get residency permit in US, he worked to speed it up). He knew all about the character and nature of the people he was dealing with still decided to make a name for himself as a mouse who roared and then ate a humble pie.

Other Embassies are watching in New York and Washington. It will become difficult to post officials in US both for consular work as well as diplomat to look after international affairs.

But to make things short, there are a number of investigations about US Embassy diplomats in New Delhi in progress, including what they pay their employees and reporting for tax purposes. Let us see how many had lied on their tax returns. Let India go ahead and arrest them under the same grounds and as trial of India diplomat proceeds in Manhattan court, trial of an American diplomat proceed in New Delhi court.

In about a week it would appear, this matter would go away. Nobody would be tried. India would give up more and receive less but claim victory. India is not China or Russia where man for man they would have already arrested an American diplomat.

Indian politicians are less worried about the diplomat's insult, they are more worried about their own personal affairs. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is a pocket toy of American (his family would prefer to settle in America), Sonia Gandhi keeps coming for treatment to New York. She does not wish to loose that privilege. Her son Rahul Gandhi was lackluster student in US and graduated only because of the patronage of the American Government. Every Indian politician or high official has a kid or immediate interest in US. They do not wish to jeopardise that by acting tough with the American diplomats in Delhi. The only reason they are giving the appearance of acting tough today is that in this internet and modern age, the arrest and cavity search (reserved for gun runners and drug smugglers) of Indian diplomat could not be swept under the rug. People in India were up in arms. With federal elections round the corner, the politicians did not wish loose any more votes.

If an American diplomat is arrested for fraud, conspiracy and lies, in New Delhi (which may happen, because Americans are not the most honest people), the only reason the current government would be doing that is to please the people. They are aware that toughness could bring them votes back, which they lost in last month's provincial elections.

Grave crime isn't a crime either result in bodily injury or not, a grave crime in the US mean someone committed a felony or a federal felony that result in a grave consequence in term of punishment.
